Unhappy Lost my camping buddy of 13 years

Had to put my camping buddy down this weekend. 13 years of Bear being by my side has ended. He was a rescue Shepherd mix. Awesome dog and was attached to me tighter than a tick. My daughter gave a me a picture of he & I in a frame that says "who rescued who?". Which is a very fair question. Have a trip scheduled this weekend and I told the wife I really just don't want to go. This is the 2nd time I've had to make a decision like this. I lost my other camping buddy in 2009. I know it will get easier, but it is a crushing blow right now.
How about some pics/stories of your 4 legged camping buddies help out.

Happened to us 2 years ago. We thought we might try without another dog. Had a puppy within 3 days. They certainly become large parts of our life. Sorry Bear is not around.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I love how they just know that we are going camping as they help load the trailer. Our newest camping buddy went on her first trip this weekend.

Howie70, so sorry to hear that news. We too are facing the same situation with our 14 year old rescued Beagle. Our first trip out is next week and we aren't sure she will be with us.
You have our sympathy as we know what you are going through.

Sorry to hear, it's the worst part. I've had to do it a few times and hopefully not for awhile for my current buddy.

Yep, it's rough to lose the co-pilot. I dropped my hauler off for service and we went to our destination. Had to let her go while there as it was time.
The worst day of my life was picking up the hauler and having to go inside knowing her toys and dish were still there.
I think the toys are still under the table, where they probably will stay for a few more years.

So sorry for your loss. My camping buddy is 12 1/2 and has slowed down some but he loves to ride in the truck and go camping. I really dread the day when his time is up.

Howie,

We used to camp on the water, some call it boating, we had Duke. He was famous on the dock. Coincidently our Vet also had a boat there. When we could no longer put off the day and booked our appointment we arrived to find that both Jim and his wife/assistant had booked off for the day not wanting to be part of it. Doctor Brent was the stand-in. It was January 2nd, 2002 and the image of the four of us will forever be burned in my memory.

I was lost for a while, didn't know what to do, and then a friend who has always had dogs said, "you honor the memory of your lost friend by getting another dog because it was such a wonderful time." This is Duke.

So we did, we got Quigley and Tikka, rescued Kodi and now we have Monte. Wouldn't it be awful to just have one friend waiting at the Bridge?

All our Best to you. Paul

So so sorry for your loss. Big Bear sized hole in your heart, I'm sure. Here is a pic of our 3, they go with us everywhere. The red is 11 1/2, the black just turned 10, and the red merle is 2 1/2. I am dreading the day the older one goes to the Rainbow Bridge, camping won't be the same without any of them.

My guy is 5 now and he started to get white hairs in different places. I can see he is maturing quickly. I had to put my daughter's bearded dragon down a few months ago and that was tough for the family. I can't imagine what it will be like when it is his time.

Kevin,

They are gorgeous, all of them are aren't they? After Duke we gave our love and care to Quigley and Tikka, littermates. When it came time to say good-bye to them we searched for a rescue and found Kodi. He was six they said, his owner had died and a friend brought him in as no one in the family wanted him. I just can't believe that, I mean just look at him, how beautiful he is. We enjoyed the gift of his company for 4 plus years and then a stroke forced us to let him go. This is Kodi.

They are a gift and all we can do is enjoy them and be thankful for as long as we have them.

Paul

Sorry to hear about losing your buddy. I am sure he loved every minute of being with you. Good dogs are easy to get attached to. We rescued one from a situation and are trying find a good home for her. She is a great dog a female Shepherd but we can't keep her. We have had her a month and it will already be hard to give her up so I can imagine how you feel. When it is time find another and give it a great home and time camping. Another can't replace but it can fill the hole. Remember the good times. God Bless.

All gone now. Time to start again.

Sorry for your loss.

We traveled with three human children and three furry childen (Newfoundlands).

We were quite a site when making a fuel stop:

Each kid took a dog for a walk.
Mom went inside to grab snacks.
I fueled and serviced the tow vehicle and did a walk-around on the trailer.

Grand times for all. Memories that just keep coming back.
