Lost my Shop Buddy

Well after a week of giving him medications I had to put him down.

I will miss him even though he was only with us for 1-1/2 years he used to follow me around the shop and keep me company. You might say he adopted me as he just showed up one day and announced himself to me. It was hard to tell the vet as she spoke to me on the telephone as I was trying to hold back the emotion. When ever he was in trouble I would scold him and I swear he would say no to me it wasn't him. He will be greatly missed as he was growing on me I named him trouble as it seemed fitting. All I know is that the first vet I took him too was not interested in getting him well as their ad stated but was more interested in selling me flea medication and various antibiotics it cost me 200 dollars. When he got sicker I could not get them to look at him so I went to another vet. 600 more dollars to find out what he really had and that it was told to me that he was stricken with a Fatal diease called FIP so I made the call had him put down. I'm upset that the first vet did not take a test of his blood that would of determined that he was that sick.

I am sorry for your loss. Been there too many times.

Please try not to let too much anger into your heart for the first vet.
You said it was a fatal disease, the outcome wouldn't have been different except for the money spent, which we all know we would spend anyway on them.

Pets have a much shorter cycle of life than we do even though we'd like to keep them forever. It's part of owning a pet.

God Bless you.

Like I said on another forum The money I lost was nothing compared to losing him. I know the outcome would of been the same except I wouldn't of had 1 week of watching him suffer of which I feel responsible for. Money for my animals is not a issue as I have 9 feral cats that I have had neutered or spayed so that is not what makes me upset at the other vet. The fact that they seem to want to sell you things you don't need over helping you and your pet. The other vet actually wanted to know what vet I had taking him to and why? Since this vet is my usual one for my other animals.

So sorry for your loss OneTon. Making that decision is one of the hardest things we do as pet owners....

It is heart wrenching to lose any pet, but a shop buddy is doubly difficult.

Always hard to lose a furry friend. Sounds like you were a great human for him. I'm sure he enjoyed your company as much as you did his. You made the final years of his life better.

Pets are family....so difficult to lose a family member. He found you for a reason and you both had a great relationship. So sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry to hear that. I had Buster 17 years and 7 months before he was put to sleep. I held him while the vet gave the shot until after his last. That was nearly 3 years ago and he is still missed.

Been cleaning up the shop for a few months now (35 years of stuff) today I moved the FE engine block that he was using to hide in toward the end and I sure miss having him watching me he will be missed. Thanks to every one who has replied this has helped quite a bit.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Fur buddies are the greatest friend!

I lost my beloved cat that started out as a flea problem that went downhill from there. I knew I wanted another cat that needed a good home. I was searching for another cat that reminded me of her but ended up coming home with a cat that was totally opposite. He too was a great buddy.

Sorry for your loss. We lost 2 cats last year. First 1 in may went out and never came back. Coyote got him we think. Second cat died from bobcat fever. He was our favorite he never went outside. One of our other cats brought home a bad tick. That cat survived the bobcat fever. But our big boy troubles didn't. He was always waiting for us to get home. He be right at the door when we came in. He was one of our children. Still miss him.

Actually I have lost more but they were wild or feral cats I miss them but that is to be expected since we have had a housing boom going on around us. (Time to move again)

Also anyone have advise for taking a four year old cat with us camping for the first time. I have tried to train her with a harness and now she has a wrap around she looks like a taco and acts like one too. That little shop buddy actually worked good with a harness I sure wish my House cat would learn how he did it? She is about 15 lbs. of really mean stuff too. I'm hoping she learns because we just don't have anybody who wants to take care of her while were gone.

So sorry for your loss..... I do not like vets that just let them linger and suffer just to pad their pockets. Our vet would give us the straight options.

We have lost several pets to old age and cancer over the years. It is hard!! Had been with our vet for at least 17 years. Our vet recently passed away at 44 years old, it was tough too, as he was like a member of the family more than our personal doctor. He was one of those people that knew you by first name no matter where you saw him. Now we are looking for a good vet again.

Yes it is he lost half his weight in less than a week. I took him to the first vet they checked him out gave him antibiotics and flea med and sent me on my way. I figured after treating him 3 days he kinda improved but still not right. after 7 days I took him to second vet and they said he was a sick boy and started doing test he checked out OK for lukema and when they did blood test they called me and said it was bad red cells are usually 26 when low his was 6 doctor told me his muscles were not getting enough oxygen and when she saw his white cell count she knew what it could be after x-rays they were able to confirm it was FIP.
