Mod for Dogs

Hi folks. New to the forum. New owner of a 23SS - arrives tomorrow .

Question - has anyone suggestions for camping with a dog or a mod to help with having a dog along? Don't want ours to wreck the trailer but love having him along. Lol

Ours is a 80 lb chocolate lab.

We have a collapsible kennel we bring along for our 100lb lab.
He stays outside.

No its a full size metal crate that collapses down to the base.

He never minds going in .

We have two Shih Tzu's , one 6 lbs and the other 11 lbs, that travel in our TV in pet taxis that are secured in the rear seat with seat belts. They sleep most of the time we are moving.

At the CG they stay in the FW and watch what is going on outside or sleeping or just hang with us.

We have them on leashes when outside.

Other than buying a rear seat belt extension so the larger pet taxi can be secured, we have not done anything else.

We have a shih tzu as well.
She usually ends up in situations like this with toby.
She has free rein inside our camper till bedtime then she goes in her pet carrier for the night.

I was also thinking some good mattress covers might be in order. Any suggestions on this? 60x80 mattress.

Couldn't hurt - we take some old pillows for our little guys to lie on - they like them and I guess they sort of remind them of home.

We have always crated our dogs or used x-pens under an ez-up awning (we also put the sides up for privacy and weather protection, as needed) when camping or at the dog shows - even when we had a big motorhome. I dont want dog slime on the fabric or slung on the cabinets and I would be so mad if they chewed a cabinet corner because they got bored. SO, Love my dogs but work too hard for the extras such as an RV.

The ex-pens are nice because they allow a large dog a larger area to lay and relax and walk around (typically 4x4) while the crates are more secure and smaller (28 tall" x 44" long x 26" wide). At campgrounds, I sometimes load the crates back in the truck and have them sleep inside if they wont settle down for unknown reasons. We also carry along an ultrasonic barking unit which deters them from sounding off. I just have to show it to them and they turn away like "it wasnt me"

Excellent suggestions. You have a great set up. I love the hound but you're right about not wanting the RV trashed. Really like that extension and privacy feature you have. Don't think mine would chew a cabinet but he'd shed all over the mattress in a heart beat - along with some dog drool too.

I never thought mine would chew until I left our 18 month male in the house, came home and found he had chewed the door molding in the kitchen. Boy did I have some 'splaining to do to my husband. That dog went from being "his" dog, to "your dog" in the blink of an eye. Another dog I had decided the tiny scuff in the linoleum floor in the laundry room didnt look right. By the time my husband got up to make coffee, the scuff was a large 3x4 ripped out chunk. I rationalized that we were planning on tile in that room anyways. haha So, my well behaveddogs lost their good rep as housedogs. I dont dare trust them because Id only be mad at myself if they mistakenly become destructive in the small travel trailer.

Gosh, Its small anyway - I really dont want it to feel like I am truly living in a dog house. I am sure their dog breath alone (goodness, imagine a single SBD dog fart) will make the air smell oh so nasty and rancid inside the little A Frame. I imagine it would be like skunk odor and not easily removed....ugh...so they are outside, kept as comfortable and safe as possible.

our Golden was used to camping in our 2 popups, before we got our 23SS. in fact, she camped all the 14 years she was with us.
so, she never was an issue. never jumped up on things and slept right under our front bunk. she was never crated and never had to mod anything for her.

it all depends on how rambunctious your dog is. every dog is different and mayl behave differently than your dog. our dog was perfectly happy to lay down, until we ate inside or went outside.

We almost always take our 50 lb black lab with. She is house dog 70% of the time, she is outside in her 6X12' kennel during the day from April-October, otherwise she in the the house. So its no different in the camper, granted she is full of energy when others are around, but when its just "her family" she just lays down and relaxes. At home or in the camper she has never chewed or destroyed anything, except for a toy or 2.

Before we bought our hard sided Grey Wolf we had a Kodiak hybrid. We did come back from a bike ride one time and I saw a black nose sticking out from the canvas on the front bed, a little bop on the nose was all it took, we never knew of her doing it again.

We have lucked out, she is a great dog, even though she listens just as good as my DW...

Welcome to the forum CDNWhiskey and congrats on your new 23SS. Very nice hybrid. We've been camping with a dog/dogs for a long time. Our first camper was a popup and we camped in the driveway the 1st night. Our German Shorthair Pointer saw it as an extension of home because of the familiar surroundings. No stress whatsoever when we took her on the road the next day. We always take our dogs' bed from home and plenty of toys with her familiar scent on them.

I like my pets but never trust them LOL ~ life lessons ~ From the first day we get them I teach them their "bed" is a good place to be (pet taxi) and that they go to bed at night. We do not vary when camping.

Shadow loves camping due to getting much more attention that during the work week and, of course, I love walking and seeing nature and he finds this a great adventure too. Occasional issues with barking, working on behavior management....

No mods, but I did find a really cool leash at camping world that is an expandable leash with a flashlight and a doggy bag holder. Too cool!

We got our dogs familiar with the camper at home before we took them camping, & as others brought a crate, chew toys, their beds..

Now with the toyhauler they stay in the garage while we are gone & sleep at night beside our bed similar to at home. We still bring fold up crates just in case.

They love to ride on the golf car but we be sure to have them leashed & hold on to them..... They seem to love camping...walking on the beach etc.... Lots of walks...............................

Bring your rabies cert. & good idea to have their vet records with you as well.....

I always want us to travel together - he's family (eats like my brother) but just want it to happened without bothering others or having trailer issues. I think having him camp in the driveway with us is a good trial run.

Congrats and welcome. We don't do anything really different camping with our golden. It helps to take some time to acclimate the dog to the camper -driveway camping for example. We also try to keep his routine the same- feeding schedule, food, bed, toys, etc. Once acclimated to a camper, our dogs always acted the same in the trailer as when they are home.

Oh, yea - don't let him bark incessantly, pick up his poop, and don't leave him alone too long; especially in hot weather.

Nothing special here. But then again it is hard to find crates or anything that fits Anchor. He is 160lbs and sleeps on the couch.
