Wildlife Vs. Pet...

Close call this weekend!

We had our beloved PUG DOG at the lake with us this weekend. DW went outside in the early morning to let her 'do business'. She usually just ties her to the tree...but that morning she was loose on our lot. The dog ran around the back of the trailer, and DW went back there to check on her. Just as she rounds the corner...a great big OWL swooped down from the trees...and tried to grab the dog! DW scared it off...but it sat in a nearby tree...and continued to watch the dog! We have seen the OWL on 2 separate occasions...but never thought about 'why' it was hangin' around.

Small dog owners beware! Keep an eye on your pets! I realize...the bird would most likely not have been able to drag the dog off...but sure could have done some damage. I studied up on owls since...and attacking dogs is rare.

Prey

I had to scare off a red-tailed hawk when our Welsh Terrier was a 3 pound puppy. It is really scary and horrible to think about what could have happened.

Could it be the owl had a nest, babies, nearby and was trying to scare potential predators away?

Very possible. I haven't seen the owl this season...but others have. Doesn't seem to be hanging around my site, and we've added a new puppy to the family. Hopefully, it was a one time deal.
