Angry Avoid Blue Compass in Charleston SC

This dealership seems to have no true organization to it at all. We purchased a brand new travel trailer (TT) at the beginning of August. We used our own bank’s financing so the dealership got paid everything they were owed up front. We are titling this in our home state and being a cash deal it should have been super simple. “Should have been” being the operative words here.

I went in & made the deal with the salesman & of course they did the typical back and forth “let me talk to my manager.” That didn’t bother me. What bothered me was I told them up front that we had full financing from our bank and would NOT be using their financing, & we had no trade-in. The salesman tried to push their financing on me over and over, & I kept having to tell him we had our own financing. He actually told me that they wanted us to use their financing so they could get their kick-back. I refused and they finally let me put down the “deposit” which was later called a “down payment” on the paperwork. The dealership kept pushing us off when we AND our banker asked for the wire transfer information, delaying their receipt of the money by 3 days. We had signed our paperwork with our bank the next day so all we were waiting on was the dealership.

My husband and I returned 4 days after the initial deal was made to pick up our unit at the scheduled demonstration time. They seemed to have difficulty finding someone to take us through. Everyone looked busy but nobody knew just who was going where. While we were waiting they took us to Financing to complete the rest of the paperwork. The financing rep told us we owed the cost of the TT that day. We AGAIN reminded them that the bank had already sent the money and we had confirmation from the dealership that the money was received. Then a half-snarky comment was made about how we didn’t use their financing. We also had to remind them yet again that our bank would be taking care of TT&L in our home state. They didn’t seem to know what to do with that information so I let them know all they had to do was send the ORIGINAL Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin to our bank and they said that should not be a problem. They did let us know that their titling clerk had quit the week before but that they would get that information right out to our bank.

We did our demo with a very nice kid and he was very helpful. If he didn’t know something he went and found out. I was very happy with him. Getting the TT out of there was another story. We kept asking about the temp tag and they kept telling us they would go get it. Over 30 minutes after the demo one of the Service guys comes over and tells us that they couldn’t get us a temp tag but that we should be fine since we had our new purchase paperwork.

Here we are nearly 3 weeks later and this deal is still dragging on. We have spoken to the salesman, to two different people in financing, the Manager, and as of today some Manager that is supposed to be above the other manager. Three days after the TT pickup our bank started asking us about the titling paperwork from the dealership. Again, ALL this dealership had to do was send the ORIGINAL Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) to our bank. I started calling the dealership asking them about it, and about getting a temp tag from them. Every single day I called I was told whomever I needed to talk to was out that day and that it would be taken care of “tomorrow.” My husband and I have had to call nearly a dozen times in the past two weeks and we were constantly told “tomorrow”, “tomorrow”, “tomorrow.” I started asking for tracking numbers for the two packages and kept getting told “tomorrow.” Finally this past Thursday we told them that if they did not get the temp tag overnighted to us and get the ORIGINAL MSO sent to our bank we were going to tell our bank to reverse the funding and bring back the TT. We were told our temp tag and the MSO would be overnighted out this past Friday. We did not receive the temp tag Saturday or Sunday. I had family things going Monday so I did not get a chance to call, and I started getting this TT ready to go back to the dealership. We FINALLY received the temp tag today (Tuesday). IT WAS SENT YESTERDAY, NOT FRIDAY AS PROMISED.

We spoke to our bank today and the newest dealership Manager finally EMAILED a copy of the MSO. That same manager told my husband that the bank now had everything they needed in order to title the TT. That is not true because our state requires the ORIGINAL MSO to be filed with them, not an emailed copy, which I have relayed to every single person I have spoken with in the past two weeks every single time I spoke with them. I also kept relaying that we had to leave where we are at for the next job by this current weekend. The only reason I can think of for this taking so long is some sort of retaliation for not using their financing. I will NEVER recommend this dealership to ANYONE unless they just want a major headache on their hands.

I would have too. And it wouldn't have been the first time I've gotten up and walked out of an RV dealership.

I understand that you had trouble, but don't feel alone. If everybody who had a bad experience at a dealer said don't go there, there wouldn't be any dealers anybody could use.

I bought 3 motorhomes in the last 10 years, only one purchase went smoothly. We actually had the dealer return our deposit on one after 3 months because we had a RV with a NY title and we were trading it in in Florida. They didn't know what to do.

Sad to hear. I bought my RV from a dealership in Danville, VA. I also brought my own financing. It was a smooth, no pressure, trouble-free experience. Now that dealership is part of Blue Compass. I guess I won't be going back there. I don't like the huge corporate groups of dealerships.

"No organization" in a RV dealership seems to be a common theme. One department can't talk to another when it comes to coordinating tasks that need to be completed prior to you taking delivery on your new unit. The service department can't find your appointment in their system, your parts were ordered months ago but no one can call you to tell you they arrived so your service visit can be scheduled. No one can return calls, you have to pester them every day to get a response. No matter what you need or are expecting from the dealership, you have to act like your own project manager to make sure everything gets addressed as it should. Even with all the hassle, we love our TT and are so happy we bought it.

Take the high road. It's usually less muddy.

File a complaint with the state DMV and AG. There are legal deadlines they must meet but I don't know what they are in your state.

Also, Lazydays, a larger RV dealership, recently reported they make an average of $5,300 in F&I on each RV sale. F&I is finance and insurance, with "insurance" usually being their exorbitantly over-priced "extended non-warranties".

NEVER tell a dealer you're using other financing or cash UNTIL the pricing is a done deal. That can get you a better final price. These ain't the old days when cash was king in vehicle sales.
