Fresh Water Over Flow

I have a 2020 Palomino Columbus 1492 fifth wheel. When I fill up my fresh water tank sometimes I over fill it. My fifth wheel is level when I do this. I pull it out to the street when we leave for our trip and the water starts coming out of the over flow valve. Not just a little but the water flow a lot. Then it keeps coming out for quite sometime on the way. I know this because both times it happened we had friends following us. I maybe over fill the tank one gallon or two.

I am not sure what’s going on with it?

If anyone has any ideas what to do please let me know.

Thank You

When you overfill it, the tank expands, and as the tank relaxes it pushed water out.
Be careful on overfilling, it may damage your floor as the tank expands like a balloon. I would get a flow meter and keep the water a tad below max.

A flow meter only tells half the story....

Our tank is 100gal....when the flow meter say 87.6gal the water flows out of my overflow hose. I have seen more than 3.5 gal come out of the overflow after this, verified with a bucket...

Was the tank totally empty before you filled it?

On a lot of tanks there is a varying amount of water retained in the tank even after it's emptied through the drain valve. This is due to any sagging of the tank bottom between brackets.

This will of course vary from tank to tank but it's just the nature of the beast.

100% empty. From my research the tank capacity it measured based on outside dimensions. Once you take into account wall thickness and some air gap the 86 gal makes sense.

CC75 is right on. More than one RV has had tank fall out, or straps pop from overfilling. Also, from experience there can be a siphon effect when your tank is filled. Water will be sucked out of that overflow. I put a small on/off valve at the end of mine to stop it. Just make sure you open when you're stopped or filling.

I have decided to do the same...a small trickle out of the overflow turned into multiple gallons being syphoned out.

I also decided to drill a few small holes in the fill cap to help the tank breathe while the overflow valve is off.

Overflow location?

I have the similar question. I have a 2021 Palomino Columbus 389FL and I believe I overfilled my tank. First time inhad to use it. The gauge is horrible. I believe it’s not that accurate. When it said I was full, I was able to turn it off about 30!seconds later and water came gushing out from under the front of my rig from what looks to be a vent designed for this issue. I hope undid t damage it. Any thoughts?

if your overflow is lower on your tank, then it may be siphoning out, a lot of them do this, I have put valves on mine so after i fill and see it come out of the overflow i shut the valve and it does not siphon out.
