shackle failure on a columbus 320

I have a columbus 320 5th wheel and had a pair of shackles break at the bolt hole area, the tires were rubbing together for a short time, the trailer is 5 years old, luckly I noticed the tires while fueling up, has anyone had similar failures,

I lost one

I had one break as well but did not have the tire rubbing issue. I replaced mine with a Morryde heavy duty shackle kit (twice as thick) They are also greasable with the zerk fittings and come with brass bushings. I had plastic bushings. I decided not to use the brass bushings and got some Lippert neverfail bushings. I tried to get the Lippert heavy duty kit but they were never able to fill my order. I feel a lot more comfortable with the heavy duty kit. I also replaced my equalizer suspension since the rig was already torn down and the suspension was 5 years old.

I also had the shackles wear out but noticed the wear before they broke. Upgraded to the Morryde SRE 4000 system.

Last October on a trip back from New England States the shackle tore loose on drivers side on rear axle and tires we're almost touching when I discovered it. Wabash trailer center got us back on road , cost us $350.00 , the service tech said the shackle was 5/16" thick. Forest River is making these 5th wheels for weekend people .

With the weight of these rigs shackles and bushings need to be checked as a pre/post trip inspection.
Lippert uses cheap nylon bushing that doesn’t last very long, upgrade to wet kits.

Wow. I just picked up my 2013 320RS from the shop this morning. I replaced the springs, shackles, bolts, & Equa Flex. The holes in the shackles and spring bushings were rounded out, what we call “wollered out” down here in the South. I think installing bronze bushings with wet bolts, as well as thicker shackles should be performed after a couple years. That being said, my brakes weren’t even worn 50%. This after trips though mountains from NC to Colorado.

Columbus shackle failure

I just installed new grease type shackles and bolts with brass bushings, the new shackles are 5/16 inches thick , so this repair should finalize this under designed suspension issue, thank to all that have replied, Happy RV ing
