National Toll Transponder

I just read this article and it might be worth looking into.

Looked good until I got to the part about a service fee of $15 for any month where a toll was encountered. Plus the actual tolls.

I have found the Florida epass toll pass works all over the east coast. No reoccurring monthly fee and 18.50 for the pass.

KS and OK still suck and are not compatible with any other system. At least KS is a free sticker and no monthly fees. Texas is a bit different too. I am not sure what works on the west coast as I have not taken a route that hit many toll roads out there.

I thought that all states were required to integrate the deadline passed and everyone wanted waivers for more time. Once they do all integrate just a matter of picking the state with the best terms.

I travel coast to coast and we have 2- Maryland’s EZPass and Florida’s Sunpass.

When I’m west of Illinois, I just let the state toll by plate and they send me a bill. That goes to my mail service about 30-40 days later and I pay the bill online. Every once in a while I’m late and I’ll get hit with a huge late fee. A quick call and explanation that my mail goes to a mail service and I didn’t get it in time and they’ve always been waived (friend learned to not let it go to collections, though! they can’t waive it once it’s been sent to collections).

Texas and a couple of its metro areas have their own toll systems. As well as Washington, in Seattle. Haven’t hit too many others.

I’m not willing to fill the windshield with transponders, so I just deal with the minor hassle and extra expense of paying by mail.

All told, it’s not worth the $15/month charge. Maybe if it were $5/month, I’d consider it.

One pass for sunpass and ezpass now if it makes things easier for you. Curious if you get a better rate with Maryland on their toll roads.

Nope, the only way to get a better rate is to buy a commuter package and the last time I looked, it was only for specific toll booths and had a set timeframe (ie, a month).

I might switch to that. My MD EZPass costs me $1.50/month.

Then the FL tag cost of $18 will pay for itself the first year of no monthly fees.

KS offers a free sticker with no monthly fees that covers KS OK and TX. I was unsure of texas until just now but found this on their FAQ:

The Dallas TollTag, Houston*EZ TAG, Kansas K-TAG, and Oklahoma PIKEPASS work in toll lanes that display the*TxTag*logo throughout the state.

Interesting.
My PA EZPass has never had a yearly fee in all the many years I've had it.

MANY years ago when I decided to get an EZPass, I was told Delaware. NJ charges stupid admin fees even if you don't use it. DE EZpass does not charge fees. I think you have to pay up front for the transponder, 20 bucks so something, but after that you ONLY get charged for tolls. Very happy with the DE EzPass. It doesn't matter what state you actually live in. Oh, and if you need new velcro prickly things for a new car, they send them to you free. No shipping fees.

There was a news segment just the other day bout how behind they are for the one transponder fits all states program. It stated that sunpass was still only good in three states. so i would check into that before getting rid of the md ezpass.

Actually i would be more likely to look at another state ezpass's terms and possibly change to one of them.

If there's a annual fee for the PA E-ZPass it's well hidden in the statement. Checked my statements from the past year and don't see it. Have had E-ZPass since 2006 and have four (4) transponders. Two get used almost daily here in Richmond as my wife and daughter commute to work here in Richmond.

Yeah, I'm still paying my (adult) daughter's tolls. She says it's only fair since I technically own the car she's been driving since it was new.

I think I will switch my motorhome from sunpass to FL e-pass extra as I run other roads in NE that take ezpass. Be carefull in Florida as most places take both sunpass and ezpass, you will get double charged.

PAturnpike EZpass annual fee is $3.

Read the top FAQ here- https://www.paturnpike.com/toll/personalfaq.aspx

Here is a copy/paste from the FAQ
Automatic payment from bank account.
An initial payment of $35 per transponder plus a $3 annual fee is required to open your account.

And it shows on my statement once a year.
It's not bad. Their website is fairly easy to navigate. I plan to keep it until the eastern states get their acts together so I can one day use one transponder for Florida and the places EZpass are now accepted- which includes the new toll bridges here in Louisville.

As far as I remember- my Florida SunPass does not have an annual fee.

I have an illionis I pass with three plates registered to it. Drove my moms car to flordia for winter, didn't even have the transponder in the car, but because the plate is registered through I pass they billed me driving over the bridge from IN to KY in lousiville

I don't think this is true.
See this page https://turnpikeinfo.com/toll-passes.php?state=florida
Reading that page made my head hurt but I believe it says the E-Zpass is only accepted on some Orlando metro toll roads.
This is not to be confused with the E-pass OR the E-pass Plus!!

I have a non-removable SunPass transponder on my windshield and I also carry a portable PA E-Zpass. I guess I can wrap the E-Zpass in foil just to be safe....

You can do this now with the epass extra from FL. No monthly fees and no yearly fees just up front $18.50 for the pass and $10 in the account to get going. It will take a while to cost justify the $18.50 at $3 a year though. Depends on if it is worth only carrying one pass.

Thanks for clarifying Dan.
I don't know when this changed or if some are grandfathered in but I've went back over my last two years statements and no service fee.

As I said... interesting.

Delaware is cheaper. No sign up fee, 15 bucks per transponder.
Quote:
Q: Why is DelDOT charging the $15 Transponder Fee?
A: As the E-ZPass program matures and continues to grow in popularity, the toll agencies are realizing the staggering cost of transponders and their replacement. There are many methods being used to recoup the investment in transponders. DelDOT has elected to charge this one-time fee while others charge monthly or annual fees.
