321 From Charlotte to Boone

It's been several years since I've been to Boone and can't remember how 321 was going up. Hauling a 42' fifth wheel I want to make sure I don't have any problems. And I definitely don't want to get all stressed out.

Should I go 321 or 77 to 421? 421 seems about 40 minutes longer.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Live in Winston, 321 is good road, a lot of 4 lane, and the two lane is wide. Shouldn't have any problems. Probably be the way I would go if I was making the trip. Been a couple of years since I ran that route, good road then and shouldn't be any worse. Now when you get to the town of Boone, that is another story, hope you know where are going. Boone city streets are narrow, meaning they have narrow lanes.

Believe I'd go 77,421. Lot of red lights through hickory and also lenoir. 421 you will have lights in wikesboro but not many. ( I say red lights in hickory, because they'll all be red, not green! ).421, for the most part is 65 mph, not that you have to run it!

The 65 mph speed limit on 421 ends in Wilkesboro. Drive that speed on the 4 lane between Wilkesboro and Boone and the fines are hefty and the unmarked police cars plentiful! The only problem with 321 at the moment (other than the traffic lights) is the stretch through Blowing Rock being under construction as it is being widened to 4 lanes. Only a couple of miles and wasn't too bad a couple of weeks ago, shouldn't slow you down.

I've been on 321 6 times in the last 3 weeks. Smooth sailing from Gastonia to Lenoir. in Lenoir you will hit some red lights, but smooth sailing afterwards when you start climbing the mountain. However, I would think 321 would be a quicker route than 77 and 421.
