A sign that there is hope ---

Was off to work on my Son's trailer (commercial) just after noon and when driving past a Walmart competitor's store I saw something that I almost couldn't believe. Traffic was stopped and I saw this young teenaged girl with a "sandwich board" made of white cardboard saying "You Can't Trust Me----I Steal".

Dad was standing right there with her explaining what was going on to the stopped drivers that asked.

It's pretty obvious that a little "Shaming" was going on and in a way I found it refreshing. Way too many parents today aren't willing to take steps to change some of the rebellious behavior (like shoplifting as an example) of their kids. Looks like this father wasn't going to be one of those parents.

Don't know for sure what the triggering event was but one could guess that Dad felt some serious "medicine" was necessary to effect a cure.

When I was a kid it was never necessary to resort to this. In my family there was a direct connection between our backsides and our brain. If we didn't listen the first time our brain got the message via a good paddling.

Like I said, there is hope. At least one parent is not willing to see his kid go down the wrong path and was taking steps to make his daughter change her behavior as opposed to those parents who just surrender, waiting until the kid(s) are old enough to leave home.

Whether or not you agree with this kind of punishment, it is good to know that there are adults how have begat kids and are actually acting as PARENTS!

The punishment was probably ORDERED by a smart juvenile court judge.

And if it wasn't it should have been.

Around here the Judges are all to PC. That's why we have almost a 70% recidivism rate in our State Justice System.

We elect our judges here so most are afraid to hand out punishments like this for fear they won't get reelected.

If it was a judge that ordered it I'd like to know who it was. He's got my vote (as long as he's on my ballot).

Thumbs up for that dad! I bet whatever the daughter did, she will not do it again. IMHO the Beaver Cleaver days of parenting are over. No more eating meals together as a family, kids have their sports practices to go to, both parents work to make ends meet, etc. The kids are more independent today and some of the parents want to be their child's friend or buddy rather than a parent. Think about it, these kids are our future leaders. Fortunately, the majority of todays' kids are great kids.

I agree.
At first glance this sounds like such a great idea but in reality it's going to lower that kids self esteem even more and it's probably already in the gutter.
So the kid gets publicly shamed.
It get's put on their social media and spreads around town or even goes
viral nation wide.
Kid can't get a job later in life because someone found this info.
OR
Kid commits suicide.

Sure a thief needs to be punished.

This is not the way to punish a kid- especially not in this social media crazy time.

Thank you for spelling it out! We need to school better parenting, and character building for our youth.

Not our kid. Let's keep our collective "expert" noses out of it.

It has nothing to do with RVing.
That's why it's in the Off Topic forum.

This post should be taken down. People don't come on here to read people's opinion on politics or the state of our society. I'm bombarded with enough stupid opinions on social media and at work. We come on here to ask questions about camping, RVs, and RELATED topics.

Thank You TitanMike for sharing ...

An awful lot of kids have previously, and are presently growing up with a sufficient amount of fear and respect, that they never want to see their parents have to give them real punishment, much less be on the receiving end of what society can deal out. Once up on a time this was called being a good, hard working, honest citizen.

As for the "permanece" or persistence of things on "The Internet" ... the Euro courts are working on the whole "Undo" and hopefully American Society will learn to re-embrace the civil right to privacy as well ... this whole "social media" thing is just another pet rock in the greater scheme.

Would much rather see examples set, like "The reward of hard work, is hard play." Isn't that what most of us are here for ... ???

I was always taught to praise publicly and punish privately.

Especially with kids.

So I guess you're in favor of public shaming. Guess you like the stuff that goes on on the internet. Glad you weren't MY teacher.

Nope. I am in favor of a feedback cycle that may cause one to use several different solutions until one is found that works. This is not your child, you have no idea how this parent got where he and his child are

Judge not.

Lest YE be judged.

With our youngest child we tried the Love and logic approach. When I first heard about it I thought you are supposed to love them till they do better. I am no expert, but I knew that wouldn't do it. We went to classes...it will work. We failed and went back to the old ways...so did he. You must re-learn how to be a parent.

I was a good kid, but I was pretty scared of the consequences of my actions. I didn't hang out with bad kids...that was the real reason.

There was no personal attack. I just don't think this topic is in line with an RV forum. Have a nice day.
