Anyone Else Hear of This???
I was told one of my friends had been bitten by a tick and now has an allergic reaction to red meat. As the story was being told to me, my mind was saying this is BS or an Urban Legend.
When I returned back to my house I looked it up on the Internet and sure enough, the bite from the Lone Star Tick can cause you to develop an allergy to red meat. One more reason to protect yourself from tick bites.

Yep, my wife works with a woman that this happened to. Took a bit for the docs to figure it out. Pretty crazy stuff

Not Lyme disease but something completely different. Apparently it is rare but it does happen. Those who develop the allergy can still eat fish or chicken but red meat can cause hives and itching. I'm not sure how serious it can be, but I'd hate to have to give up bacon.

It is true.
There are several relatively new diseases that are being transmitted by ticks and this is one of them. There are likely to be more as climate change creates warmer winters killing off fewer ticks. Oppossums and spiders are excellent methods of tick control that are not well known.

I personally know of 3 different people who have this.
All are nature lovers and/or work out doors in the woods for various parks.

By 'red meat' do they mean all? Or just beef?
My grandson, about to graduate from college, has a deathly allergy to beef. Anything from a cow. Milk, red meat, cheese.......he goes instantly into anaphylactic shock. It's been with him for over 20 years.
But, he can eat deer meat. It's kept me in the woods the last few years.
One thing they have thought is that it might be tick related. But after so long, hard to know. But yes, it's one thing they have considered.

Having a read meat allergy would be such a tragedy. Tick borne diseases are no joke. I've met several long distance hikers who contracted Lyme disease and it is a no joke with very chronic issues that are difficult to cure.
