Are You Counting Days Until Retirement?

Retirement has killed more people than smallpox. I enjoy my work, and the challenges that go along with it to much to ever give it up.


I might go part time when my health won't allow full time, but I most likely will die while still being gainfully employed.

I had an app on my Google desktop that counted down to the last second on October 5, 2013 at 3:30pm. Then played a song of choice. I had it play Amazing Grace.

Retired August 1, 2015 at 56. Will probably wait till 67 to get SS. Monthly difference for the 5 years is substantial.

Just because you retire at 62 from your job doesn't mean that you need to start Social Security at that time. If you can live without it, just wait until you are olde. You will receive more that way.

We have plans to retire in six years or so. We will be 64, so some of it depends on whether we have health insurance at that point. Counting down is too stressful. We are hoping to travel for a few years after that.

Not necessarily good advice. If you have "good genes" where folks in your family live a long time (80+), it's OK. But if you've got "bad genes," and folks in your family are dying at 65 or 70 or 75, you may very well be better off getting what you can as soon as you can. Once you're gone, so are the $$.

You need to feel comfortable that the extra dollars you will receive between when you start and when you think you'll die will be more than all the dollars you might have received between when you could have started and when you put it off to. If you have health issues, you need to think about this really hard.

I'm sure you'd hate to put it off until 70, and then have a heart attack at 69!

I retired at 62 and started drawing SS then. I wanted to be able to see this great country that we live in while I still had good health. I guess everybody has a different view on this. That is what makes this country great. We can all agree to disagree and respect each others views. I am glad that some people can keep working but I started working on a farm very young and I have not had much time to do anything else until the past 10 years of my life. I am now 67 and I and my wife are enjoying being retired and being able to go and come as we please. That is just my opinion.

I retired April, 2016 after 41 years in Nursing(age 64). I started collecting SS in June, 2016, but work 4 days/month to help cover the $1052.84 monthly health insurance premium--very much looking forward to Age 65 and Medicare!! But must admit, I am glad to be part of a profession where I can get a job doing just about anything I want, as often or infrequent as I want, anywhere I want!!

Got a countdown app on my phone. It says 77 days till retirement after working 38 years. Can't wait! Head south the next day for a 5 week tour of Florida including Thanksgiving in a waterfront site in the Keys and 4 days visiting Mickey!

Sorry, but my attempt to attach the spreadsheet didn't work. Maybe the forum does not allow that spreadsheets as attachments. If anyone wants it send me a private message and I will send it direct. However, several have mentioned they have downloaded apps to their smart phones so that may be easier.

I really enjoyed the careers I had (34 1/2 yrs), but it was all toward the goal of retirement. At 55, I walked out the door with my DW, now in our 7th year of retirement, we do and go where and when we want. RVing is just another facet of our still busy lives. Just took the 4 yo granddaughter on her first RV adventure as she called it. We had a ball. I can go on and on, but we know we are blessed and are thankful for what we have.

Semi retired at 60 with health insurance and waited for DW to call it quits. Now we travel the country and bought a park model in Arizona for a winter destination to travel from in the southwest.

Wrong, do the math. If you do nothing but invest the monthly check by the time you are 65 you will have more and by the time you are 70 you will have much more. Each person should do what meets their needs the best. Insurance is a big factor.
That being said I retired at 47 and plan to start my SS at age 62 even if I only invest it.

Im closer to your timing than the others, 30 years till im 65.
Plan to never retire, hopefully just keel over one day. I do what i want now, so i see no point in retiring. (Well i do hate mowing every week , should get my oldest trained to do that )
Plus in a couple years i plan on being "the man " instead of working for "the man".
