We picked up soda bottles but the milk bottles were picked up by the milkman who delivered milk and other dairy products once or twice a week.

Politics is strictly off limits on this forum so I won't go there. I'll just say this. I now work in Facilities Management for a municipality which gives me an opportunity to work with the folks in solid waste management (garbage and recycling) in our municipality. We're at a 55% diversion rate now (recycling and composting) but they can't find buyers for a number of products in the waste stream that could be recycled, so they have to go to landfill, or, in our case, to the "energy from waste" incinerator. Landfills are filling up and nobody wants a new landfill in their area much less next door. Same for large-scale garbage incinerators. So we are headed back to the days when there was less waste created in the first place.

In the 60's the milkman had already gone by the wayside in my area... but the milk bottles would still be returned to the local dairy store and were the real prize as they brought 20 cents as opposed to qt pop bottles that brought 5 cents and 12 oz bottles that only brought 2 cents...
a wagon full of bottles found along the side of the road, or in trash cans, or taken from your own garage might yield $1. or so... I think my "allowance" was 50 cents a week back around 1961... back when the tooth fairy gave you a quarter for a tooth!

In Waterloo region (home of the Blue Box) rinsed milk bags are specifically mentioned as recyclable. They are made out of the same LDPE as the outer bag.

I recall back in the early 80's when I visited friends in Ontario, was my first time seeing milk in bags. It was intriguing, even morseo when I seen it was kept frozen and then thawed and placed in plastic milk bag holders. That was SO COOL to see being we here in the states didn't buy, or even freeze our milk in that manner. Although, I still recall the milkman leaving a bottle of milk on our doorstep each morning back in the 60's as well. And just as others, I too, was one of those who scoured the neighborhood seeking pop bottles to buy that penny 🍬. A 5 cent bottle refund bought a lot of candy back then. 😀

I'll have to mention it to our staff in Waste. Our Regional Council has set a target of a 70% diversion rate. Without recycling waste from commercial sources and apartments that'll be hard to achieve.

Wish they packaged ketchup and mustard, heck even squeeze mayonnaise that way. In the plastic bottles you lose maybe 15% of the product. Wonder why nobody thought of that?

In Michigan, all beer and soda bottles & cans have a 10 cent deposit on them that you pay when purchased. If your lazy, there is always someone to help you out to return them for quick pocket money.

We've been drinking bagged milk from Kwik Trip for about 30 years I believe in mid-Wisconsin. There's nothing wrong with us with us with us 😋

How can you say politics is off limits here..... that's what drives this container stuff..... which by the way, all plastic containers Wii go back to glass or something other than the plastic we see now. Here in California we are already seeing milk back in the old fashioned bottles. That's why they are going back to squeeze bottles, it's cheaper to make... we will see coated paper for other dairy.
