In the CYA section- we had a garage sale last weekend and someone asked if I could break a $100 for $15 worth of stuff. I held the bill up to the sunlight and saw LINCOLN as the water mark. After they debated with me over the validity, they dropped the items and left.

With all the Craigslist horror stories out there, I don't use it any more, either to buy or sell. I put my for sale stuff on local store bulletin boards, or donate it to the Soroptimists or the Kiwanis.

I have sold and bought lots of things on craigslist. Common sense is the key. Too good to be true? Pass. Something sounds weird or off in an email, they don't even get a reply. I meet in neutral public places either with someone or with someines knowledge of meeting time and place that is expecting me to contact them immediately after the sale. I will not go to anyones home alone. If I must sell the item at the house, then I have the item outside for them, the garage and doors are closed so they can't case the house out for robbery. I also usually find a way to make my dogs presence known. When I sold my saddle on craigslist, they wanted to take the saddle to try it on the horse and rider. After much discussion, it was decided that the saddle would go out on trial only if she paid the full amount up front via PayPal. There was a written agreement that the saddle could only be returned within 3 days and in the exact condition it left in (as to be determined by seller). I took fresh dated pictures the day she took the saddle. The deal went through flawlessly and she kept the saddle. I decided anyone willing to sign a contract was a serious buyer. I was admittedly nervous though.

Yep common sense and safety in mind for each party. I just sold my bike and when he wanted to ride it I said let me get a photo of your licence and I will hold the cash. When the bike comes back, undamaged, I will give you the cash back. Turned out he wanted to keep the bike and I kept the cash.

I have sold many things on craigslist and it has always worked out but I try and live my life by "Plan for the worst and Hope for the best".

These kind of warnings can also apply to rummage/garage sales. I finally put my foot down many years ago and refused to ever let my elderly mom have any ever again at her house.

She got robbed twice, and even foolishly let a woman into her house to use the bathroom, who stole stuff from her home while my mom was busy watching this woman's kid's outside, who were running all over the place. It was obvious in hindsight how it was a well orchestrated theft...and I'm sure these people have done it a lot.

She had a man and woman team work her over too. The woman was busy asking her questions and turning her while the man stole her cash box.

Also by letting strangers near/in your house, they can scope out things for future ill doings. They can usually find out if you live alone, if you have dogs, burglar alarms, etc.................as well as see if you would be an easy mark to come back and maybe even do worse than rob you.

Facebook photos can also be used against you. You'd be surprised how those seemingly innocent party pics, show bad people things they need to know. They can easily see things in the background they may want, as well as the layout of your home, windows, security, etc.
