Chestnut wars.........now that’s something I have not thought about for years.

As a kid we lived right next to a large park that had lots of chestnut trees. We would gather the fallen chestnuts which were still in the rinds/shells ? Whatever the outer covering is called. We would stomp on the rind to break it and recover the chestnut inside. Then the battle began, throwing chestnuts at each other. Man those could hurt when hit. What were we thinking.......

Dumb kids

We were kids --
We weren't thinking

Thinking didn't enter into play until much later into adulthood!

But it was fun and we all survived.

Today "fun" is considered dangerous

Remember rope swings tied to a tree branch next a lake, river, or creek, that you could launch yourself from into the water?

Are they even "legal" today???

Considering the stories I've read in this thread about people getting mangled, burned, losing fingers, toes, arms and legs it was dangerous back then as well...

On thst note it just shows that stupidity has existed since the beginning of time.

Most kids I played with knew the limits.

When does *that* start? I'd like to have something to look forward to in my old age!

This may be why my late wife always said "don't be so childish".

Of course her favorite line was "I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up".

From some of the antics I hear and see on the news, *that* never kicks in for some folks.

In all seriousness, I'd bet I was in my late 20s before it ever occurred to me that something I was about to do might hurt.

My seminal moment was when a drunk ran a red light and almost severed my leg while riding my motorcycle home from work one night. A month in the hospital and a couple years on crutches gave me plenty of time to decide how much I really liked riding motorcycles. When I went back to riding I stuck to dirt riding. Still a bunch of drunks out there but at least they weren't driving cars.

Who remembers as a kid, getting a crew-cut at the beginning of summer? Either a regular crew-cut or a flat top? For a quarter the barber would also sell some butch wax to make the front stand up"

Do you remember when you poured a glass of buttermilk you could see all those yellow chunks of butter floating in it. I defy you to find them today.

We've still got old fashioned buttermilk available here. Not in the big supermarkets but at a rural "Creamery" nearby.

Remember back in the day when shortly after Thanksgiving the Coca Cola Santa Claus would appear in store displays, on billboards and tin signs, on cans and bottles as well as the packaging and on the sides of Coca Cola delivery trucks? You don't see that anymore. What happened to the Coca Cola Santa Claus?

As I recall, Ipana and a lot of other health care products went away in the '70's due to containing "hexachlorophene", which was found to be a known carcinogen, and banned by the FDA.
