DST vs.ST
A Texas state representative is thinking about submitting a bill that would abolish Daylight Saving Time (DST) and keep Standard Time (ST) the state's official method of time keeping.
The current DST was introduced many years ago for many reasons, one of which was to allow farmers more daylight hours to work their farms.
The representative said that the need for DST has outlived its usefulness and cites some dangers of it in today's would, one of which is children getting off school buses in darkness.
I never gave it much thought before, but now sitting in the house and having to turn lights on at 5.00 o'clock in the evening is annoying to me. I'm thinking its a good idea.
What are your thoughts on this?

I think they should do away with ST and keep DST year around.

Then you would be happy living in AZ ( except for the Navajo Nation portion) and Hawaii in the U.S.

If you want to utilize daylight, winter is when you need DST. JMO, but it's typical of the politicians getting everything backwards.

I don't understand that state representatives reasoning about the school bus thing....all winter long we are on standard time...if he wants to abolish DST it wont resolve anything with school bus safety because for the bulk of the school year we are on Standard time..like others have said here, if we stuck to DST year round then we would have daylight through to dinner time and all the kids would be off the bus.
For the record...I am just north of the US/Canada border....on Dec 21st, our shortest day...official sunset time will be approx 4:26...that's early!!! In summer, our longest day, June 21st sun doesn't set till 9:50....love that! In Minneapolis, just 7 hrs from us...sunsets a solid 1/2 hr sooner.

I don't care which they use, I'd just like to get rid of changing the clocks all together. It drives the dog nuts when he doesn't know why he has to wait an hour later to be fed.

... and me, too.
If the school start time is an issue, this representative should alter his bill to force schools ONLY to change their start/close hours!

Don't you have this backwards? DST would make it darker in the morning and lighter at night for the same "time". With DST, you would be turning your lights on at 6:00. So, aren't you really arguing FOR DST?

No... where we live in the USA, DST saves daylight time in the evening so farmers can/could stay out and work longer.
From Wikipedia: " Daylight saving time ( DST) or summer time (see "Terminology") is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that light is extended in the evening hours, and sacrificing normal sunrise times."

I was always led to believe that the school bus thing was in the mornings...as that is how it would be here in Louisiana. If the time doesn't change in the winter months, then it get's light here at 7 AM, which is past the time a lot of kids get on the bus. With no time change, they would be awaiting the bus in the dark.

That's the way I understand it. That's why I suggested the schools should change their start times to later and leave the rest of us out of it. I guess that would foul up some parents, however.

Thought our d - o - g was the only one that noticed.....glad to know he's not alone. Come to think about it, I'm having to wait an extra hour too.....DOWN WITH DST!!

Maybe instead of changing the clocks we could get the government to increase the number of hours in the day so I can take longer naps!

My problem with DST was that the clock on the VCR was always blinking 12:00. When it was time to "spring forward" I could never figure out how to make it blink 1:00.

I vote for day light saving plan. This farmer stuff, Standard time it lighter in the AM and darker earlier. In DLS it is darker in the morning and lighter at night. Isn't it the same amount of day light time for a farmer. Either morning or night. It is much safer for kids during DLS. Here in Virginia it's lite at 7:15 AM mostly during DLS. School starts at 8:30 AM and out at 3:00PM. You don't see buses until around 7:30 AM, I guess it is different in every state.
