When a tree falls from the stump it acts as a lever and distributes the force. Your trailer held up well.

When the top comes out of a snag, or a large branch falls then they often fall vertically. That is the kind of stuff that can go right through the roof.

I am careful when backpacking in older forests. Last summer I set up camp and them moved it to a safer spot. Two days later a giant old tree came down within a couple of hundred yards of our camp.

Hate to hear this happening to you. If it's a healthy tree that was uprooted due to a storm, then most likely you are going to be dealing only with your insurance company.

I'm dealing with something similar right now, where a healthy tree came uprooted on the property line with a neighbor during a storm and fell over on their rent trailer.

Here is what Allstate Insurance states:

Sadly, when he campground owner removed other trees to prevent their falling and doing damage that may have put this tree at greater risk. When trees grow in groups they all take a bit of the force from any wind. Remove any of them and the force from the wind is greater on remaining trees.

In the end the Insurance Company will have the final say unless one wants to take legal action against them and that's when they find that most contracts have an arbitration clause.

As for the admonition to take mitigating steps to prevent water damage that may not be covered, this is standard among all insurance companies. It's no different than coming home and finding that a water line under the sink broke and your kitchen floor is covered with water. It's up to YOU to turn off the water so the damage doesn't get worse.

In this case a tarp costing less than $20 would satisfy the mitigation requirement.

I have no fear your insurance will cover your RV...even if they file against the park/COE/fairground/whoever. You will be covered. They want you happy and they want to be seen as "friend". Were there any other units damaged? The more the better.

I had only paid insurance on my old unit for less than 2 years.. less than $500 and they paid $17K out. I kinda felt sorry for them. I pay more insurance than I do in house payments and part of my utilities and I only pay a portion of my health care.

My property taxes add up to more than I pay for all of my insurance, house, car, truck, trailer, umbrella, and healthcare.

They just held a special election wanting to add another $350 per year to my tax bill which will no doubt pass when all the ballots are counted (we vote by mail here).

I'm about to make my first insurance claim in over 20 years. The crack in my trucks windshield finally grew big enough. Hope they dont get mad and raise my rates[emoji15]

Ironically, when I switched my insurance last year to another company, I was dinged because I had used the windshield replacement clause on my truck a few months earlier with my previous carrier.

The tree has been removed and the trailer is covered for water damage. Since the tree was gone and the front end of the trailer was no longer 5 ft in the air, I could get inside safety. Attached is an inside pic and a new outside.

In my opinion I think the insurance will total it, thinking the repairs will probably cost close to what a replacement might be. Let us know how things progress. I would head to Stoltzfus to see what they have on their lot, they are very good to deal with and honest, ask for Lee in sales and just tell him a FROG member sent you, I bought our Cedar Creek thru him and was very pleased with the sale and service when needed.

MissDenise, Condolences on the unfortunate turn of events. Thankfully there were no injuries and you are fully insured.

I admit I've found you're post eye opening. This weekend will be our first venture into camping. Also from the PA area, over here in Ephrata. Your post has given me (and I am sure others) a heightened awareness for weather and tree damage potential. We had been planning to head out for a long weekend with the camper to a wooded campground, but with the nasty weather outlook for Friday, and the awareness from your post, we are delaying our trip 24 hours until after the weather.

Best wishes, I am sure it will work out well in the long run. Also check out RV Valumart over my way, they have a wide selection.

Hahaha, I've had that awareness since camping with the Scouts. If the thought, "I hope I don't die out here" doesn't cross your mind at least once, you're not camping!

You can see $15K worth of damage ++ what you cannot see.

X2. I'm betting frame and suspension damage also. I would push the adjuster for a total loss. If it's not, it will be very close.

Heading to Lancaster tomorrow, so I might as well stop on the way at Stoltzfus. I will tell them a FROG member sent me...we did purchase a Sunline from them the last year that Sunline was in business. It was a great little trailer and we had no complaints about the dealer.

Thank You for the kind words. I certainly do not want to frighten anyone from camping. But I, like several others, enjoy camping in the woods and so risk is always taken.

I must say that had we been inside the camper at that time, we would still be here to tell the tale. I guess that is one reason I spent the extra $$$ for a quality built RV. IMO - it did hold up well.
We had repair work done on our previous Coachman at RV Valumart and we were happy with the job.

Ok great I will get in touch with Lee to give him a heads up, it never hurts to let him know about a potential customer heading his way to help him make time for you. He is very straight forward in his dealings, heck I even sent one family that ended up paying LESS for the camper they wanted then they were planning to.
