Fly the Flag

Sorry but I am about to get on a soapbox...DW and I are camped near Gettysburg. I am truly disappointed that I can see 14 occupied sites from ours and there is only one other American Flag displayed...on Memorial Day weekend no less! I personally find it sad that so few folks are motivated to display even a little show of pride in our wonderful country...and respect for those who have served! God Bless America!

Why don't you wait till Memorial Day to make a judgement. And Memorial Day is not for those who have served (that's Veterans Day) it is for those who have died while serving in the U.S. military.

Don't be so quick to judge. One does not have to display a flag to be proud to be American. Worry more about yourself and less about what others do or don't do.

Well... based upon this reaction my thinking is misguided, but I am none-the-less disappointed that more folks don’t care to fly our flag. 1 in 10 campsites with a flag displayed is typically a lot! So sad!

That's part of what makes America great. We are all free to express (or not express) ourselves in any way we see fit.

Another way to observe Memorial Day is to visit one of America's 130+ national cemeteries this weekend. They will be decorated beautifully with gravesite flags at the headstones of those who have fallen in our nation's defense. Including, of course, Gettysburg National Cemetery which President Lincoln famously dedicated on Nov. 19, 1863.

Something to consider---

If you are a Veteran or child of the WW-II generation flying the flag just comes natural. As time moved on people have become more and more complacent about the flag and many other traditions. Many younger ones don't even know why we celebrate many holidays. To them it's just a day off school or a day off with pay.

As we time passed and we transitioned to an all volunteer military more and more people were born to parents who never served and those traditions were further discarded. Gone are the parades and celebrations that used to be annual events featuring military units and honoring those who both served and died.

In short, we've had a lot of changes in our society over the last half century and what us "old-timers" and Vet's have followed aren't necessarily part of the younger generation's traditions.

I'll fly my flags ("Old Glory" and branch of service flag) not just on select days but whenever possible. Will I condemn those who don't? Nope, this is America.

I think that OP was just expecting to see some more flags on display. I display a flag at home, although admittedly not always in accordance with flag code.
when i camp i do not take or display a flag, but our camper does say Patriot Edition in HUGE letters on the front! . I am rarely at my site unless we are cooking or sleeping. we are usually out hiking or exploring. the less i have to take and set up the more time i get to relax and enjoy. as a side note, we love seeing everyone who does set up a flag or decorate their site!

We are backed up into trees, so there is no room for the normally there flag pole. So, I put one across the road in the field. The US flag is a must for our campsite.

Most camper don’t follow proper US flag codes.
Illuminating the flag after sunset or bringing the flag in during bad weather are two codes Not followed in many campgrounds.

No disrespect to the flag or the ones who earned it...

I feel anyone who "tries" to show patriotism either properly or improperly is better than a person who lacks patriotism(or at bare minimum a love for this country).

To me it's like when they made a chocolate Jesus. Was it disrespectful? Heck yes, but what it did do was got people to talk about the Lord... I bet Jesus was mentioned more in that time than he had been in a long time.

I guess the US Navy doesn't follow the flag code. I was on flag detail a number of times (and saw it every day) and we never brought it in for bad weather. It went up to Reveille at 8am and came down to Taps at sunset, every day.

There is actually OK to fly the flag during foul weather if it's designed for foul weather.

And perhaps comments like this are why more RVers don't fly them religiously. And all the flag 'rules' are just etiquette, not laws. So really, suggestions on showing respect.
We usually fly the US flag, along with a state flag, especially at NASCAR. Yes, US flag is always highest. Nope, don't always take it down at night, but I can say it is illuminated by the campground lights
We have had several folks at crowded RV campgrounds complain about the flapping noise, so we usually don't fly any flags at private campgrounds. Too many grumpy old farts.....

I don't bring a flag when we camp. Does that make me unpatriotic?
