GM Navigation Map Updates

For those that have a GM truck with the Infotainment IO6 factory navigation system. How often do you purchase map upgrades? Can you purchase the upgrade through a GM dealer or are they only available online through GM Navdisk?

From what I've read the update may only be available from Navdisk......but, I'm not sure.

I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading yet as the truck is only a year old. I'm not concerned with new coffee shops that are added to the POI....it's the road changes and updates that are of interest and would an update be of value right now?

Thoughts?

I didn't bother, and probably won't. I use the Garmin 760 99.9999% of time, just more robust and allows access in transit. I rarely use the NAV feature of the DIC.

Not familiar with GM's system, but the DW wanted me to update the maps in her Grand Caravan after she got tired of the instructions at the Ambassador bridge being out of date. So, when the vehicle was about 5 years old, and about 2 years after the bridge was rerouted, I bought the update... Only to still have the issue of the instructions around the bridge be wrong.

Lesson learned, just because something has been updated, doesn't necessarily mean it's actually 'up to date'.

I asked for my truck once... They wanted a bit over 250 to do the update at the dealer... I have a Garmin.

My DW has a nav system in her GMC Terrain. Its maps are often out of date. I got an "offer" letter to buy a map upgrade for about $170. I asked an executive of the dealership where I've bought 4 vehicles. He said "You won't be happy with an upgrade. The next upgrade is already out of date... still way behind actual." Back to Google Maps on the iPhone.
