herk

Herk has been just skimming under the radar the last week or so ...........
I wonder if he is on some kind of top secret mission .

You know one of those that requires to shoot first ask questions later type of deals !

He pops in and says a few kind words and strums up some kind of great wisdom and then slips away without as much as a peep.

somethings fishy here I can smell bad carp .

Back from Ohio. (Wright-Patterson AFB and the USAF Museum).

If you never have... You should.

Also the USMC Museum just south of DC on I-95.
Also very worth the visit.

The USAF museum is the largest aviation museum in the world.
Plan on 4 days to see it all.

Reservations required (3 months in advance) for the "Back Lot Tour" of the restoration facilities. (only Friday afternoons)

ALL free, except for the IMAX.

Been there done that and it is very impressive and enjoyable. Got to get up close and personal with the SR-71 which I have always been in awe of. For that matter, still am. Have several books on it. And to think it was designed by old fashioned drafting methods and a slide rule. Kelly Johnson was a genius!

Our Boy Scout Troop travels from Indianapolis to Dayton every year for our Winter Bushwack. We spend one day taking in Wright-Pat each time. The boys love it! Took my family over and did the Presidential planes. That was really special!

If you ever get out to the Left coast, March AFB has a decent air museum that I've been to a few times. Oh, and Vandenburg. Man, I don't know if they have a museum, but we get up there to go pig hunting and its absolutely beautiful real estate, big hills overlooking the ocean, some of California's finest... And you can even see some of the BIG rockets.

Stayed many times at March AFB.
Never been to Vandenburg AFB; how I missed that I have no idea.

Space and Missile Heritage Center
The Space and Missile Heritage Center preserves and displays artifacts and memorabilia to interpret the evolution of missile and spacelift activity at Vandenberg from the beginning of the Cold War through current non-classified developments in military, commercial, and scientific space endeavors.

The initial display area is made up of two exhibits, the "Chronology of the Cold War" and the "Evolution of Technology". The exhibits incorporate a combination of launch complex models, launch consoles, rocket engines, re-entry vehicles, audiovisual and computer displays as well as hands-on interaction where appropriate. The Center will evolve in stages from these initial exhibit areas as restorations of additional facilities are completed.
The Center is located at Space Launch Complex 10, site of the first IRBM tests of the Thor and Discoverer (aka Corona spy satellite) series of launches. It is Vandenberg's only National Historic Landmark that is open for regularly scheduled tours through the 30th Space Wing's Public Affairs office.

I've been to the museum at Wright-Patterson AFB. It was almost 20 years ago though. I remember walking under the SR-71's wing and losing the radio reception on my walkman.

Couldn't afford a new MH like Herk, but did buy a new tow vehicle for our 5ver. Gets great mileage and we don't have to stop at rest areas.

I'll race you to the gate! How long will it take you to get ahold of dispatch fot the local PD?

Come on, we all need a little excitement in our lives...

Wait, does challenging you to a race count as exhibition of speed?

So, when I was a kid, I got this weird phobia about lloking up at planes or helicopters flying directly overhead. In my mind, something would fall off, i'd be looking up with my mouth open, and the part would hit me right on my teeth and knock them out... yeah, just a bit paranoid.

So, I'm at a job in Mira Mesa, under MCAS Miramar's final approach. I big ol jet come in, super slow, my little phobia kicks in and I slide back into my work truck. At which point I hear a loud thunk on the roof. Off bounces a BB, well a little bigger than a BB, so I know it didn't come from a kid somewhere, and it wasn't traveling very fast, I caught it with my eyes as it rolled through some leaves in the parking lot.

I have no idea if it was a ball bearing from something on the jet or not. But I don't llok at planes flying overhead...
