Paypal spam

Here's a fun game to play. Let's see how many ways we can tell this is a fake email?

Could it be the horrible spelling and general butchering of the English language?
Could it be the obvious Gmail account this was sent from?
Could it be the hidden hyperlink that was shown when I hovered over the button that didn't direct me to the real Paypal website?

I actually got 2 of these and forwarded them to spoof@paypal.com per the instructions on their real website.

Just thought everyone could use a good laugh.

Who ever said criminals were smart. And whoever bought that puts them in the same category. Stupid criminals and stupid victims; perfect together!

First clue to me would be the fact I don't have a PayPal account.

I don't like the idea of "open access" to my bank account.

You can link to a credit card instead, so you have double protection. In all the many years I've had a Paypal account, not a single problem. Paypal sends you an email everytime it's used, so you would know if something shady is going on.

I have only had 1 problem with all of the stuff I have paid for through Paypal. The seller was a grab the money and run artist. I filed a complaint and got my money back within a week. I will continue to use Paypal but only when I initiate the transaction.

Getting back to the OP, you can usually tell the spam by the grammar and the fractured sentence structure. Some times it is actually comical.

You want comical? Ever check out Engrish.comEngrish.com | Documenting the Engrish phenomenon from East Asia and around the world!? Careful, you can end up spending hour upon hour looking at that stuff! It's like watching a train wreck, you just can't look away! Except it's really funny.

I do a Newcomer's Orientation at my work for the IT Security portion. One of my slides is dealing with this kind of spam. And I always emphasize the way to see what's behind the links. I call it "Hover to Discover". Hover over the link to see where it takes you. If it doesn't look right, it probably isn't. And yeah, of course the grammar. And just in time for Halloween, addressed to the "Costumer". I love it.

Not all victims are “stupid”. We had a mini crisis this evening where a scammer called my 84 yo father, told him they were Microsoft monitoring his computer and there was an issue. They convinced him to download a file, which he started to do and fortunately my mother stopped him.

My father is NOT a stupid man, he was an. Executive with a highly technical job. But, he is 84 and may be starting to have some issues.

These pos scammers don’t have to get a lot of victims, one or two is good enough for these scum bags.

There are some websites and tons of Youtube videos of people that call or email these scammers on purpose simply to mess with them and waste their time. Some of the emails will go on for months at a time and some of the calls can go for hours.

The reasoning is that the more time they can spend simply wasting the scammer's time, the less time they have to scam someone that doesn't know what's happening.

Plus, they can be incredibly entertaining.
