My truck dealer told me the same thing...they can do it in seconds...he told me to always keep the tailgate locked...they will just move on to the next one....for those that dont have a locking tailgate...the handle can be replaced with a locking one for reasonable price.

I put a ring clamp around the pivot pint where the tailgate can be lifted off. Place the 5/16 nut in a position that is hard to get at and impossible to get off with a screw driver. I don't think any thief would have a tool to get it off. Cheap added insurance.

My tailgate has a big dent from the previous owner, so I don't think I have anything to worry about... In fact, I am actually thinking about replacing it with a better one listed on Craigslist, but now I imagine that a certain percentage of those are likely stolen... Right now camping neighbors assume I dented my tailgate backing into my TT! Makes me look bad but folks sure get out of the way when I am backing!!!

Tail Gate Theft on the rise

I hear you. Tail gates are expensive and are the easiest to steal. The ring clamp really works. I also used it on a really expensive 5th wheel tail gate.

I dented my tailgate a couple of years ago trying to lower it while a socket wrench was on my bumper. I might just leave it that way so at least it is not quite as attractive to thieves.

That's typical media for you...creating fear for no real reason. The article states that stolen gates "jumped" to 1,090 in 2013! To put that in perspective, simply clicking on the second link in the article takes you to the NICB (who track these stats), and you can see that 53,995 Honda Accords alone, were stolen in the same year.

I feel bad for those who have had their property stolen (I've had 2 4runners stolen myself...as well as many other things over the years), but this article is a joke...my opinion.

You completely missed the point.

thankfully Sneak's tailgate is a locking one, plus he locks down his tonneau cover.

Even though I lock my tailgate and retrax cover, I still don't drive it to Houston, and I limit how many times I drive it to the heliport to fly offshore. I take an old hoopty. One of those they'd leave a donation on opposed to stealing something.

I was thinking about this yesterday...I wonder how many of those "stolen" tailgates were falsely reported due to dents and such.

I have an aunt who was a major oil company executive in Houston. LOL you'd be *amazed* at what her "daily driver" vehicle looked like, as opposed to what she and her husband actually drive otherwise.

She had reserved parking in a parking garage, but says the theft/abuse of vehicles was no lower there than on street parking and that was 15 years ago. Can't imagine how bad it is now.
