Training for a 5k

My daughter joined a program called Girls On The Run. It's an afterschool running and self-esteem program. It's actually quite neat. When she signed up for it, we knew that there was a 5k at the end and she needed a "running buddy". I knew all along that it was going to be me...

My 5k training -
Step 1. 3 months of denial
Step 2. 2 weeks ahead of time - run 1 mile
Step 3. 8 days ahead of time - run 1.5 miles
Step 4. 6 days ahead of time - spend an hour playing at Pump It Up
Step 5. 3 days ahead of time - run 2 miles
Step 6. Attempt to not die on day of 5k

Daughter's 5k training -
4 months of 2x weekly afterschool workouts with the running program.

You may very well be one moderator short come Saturday when this kills me.

Doug, you know they make these shoes now that have skates inside them, that come out when you push a button.

Once you get in shape for a 5K you might as well keep it up and try some fun races. Try the short 5K Dirty Dash for starters and if you like it work your way up to a Spartan race or Tough Mudder. I am already looking forward to next years race season! BTW, I am 47.

Yes, I'm "running" the 5k. To be honest, it'll be jog some walk some, jog some, walk more. I ha hoped to do 5k in 45 minutes with a real goal of 40 minutes. I'm not sure what I'll really hit. Tonight's 2.5 miles was very hilly and I had a hard time running much at all (I'm grossly fat and out of shape!). My legs are sore from Monday's playtime at the inflatable place.

I'll post a picture of her and I on Saturday.

I'm 33 and incredibly tired of being fat and out of shape but generally too busy and lazy to consistently exercise. Plus, exercise makes me HUNGRY!

You about got it whipped. 5k is just a little over 3 miles. You almost did that today.

My theory is I want get as big out as I am tall. That way I will be round and can roll everywhere I want to go, and save a lot of energy.

Best of luck to you! Did the same thing a couple months back with my daughter to help raise money for a new track at the school (our school doesn't have a lot of funds to dedicate to this type of thing unfortunately) .

I say I ran, my wife says I can't really call it running. What I do know is that my daughter decided to take of in a sprint, I kept my nice pace all the way through and caught up with her at the 1 mile mark. I then had to convince her and her friends to do the run, jog, walk thing with me for the remainder. It was a lot of fun and motivated me to get back I to shape again........ Best of all it was a great memory for our family. As it was something we did together.

I was telling my daughter this afternoon that I've enjoyed our time together (no matter how much I complain! ).

I tell everyone I'm not overweight, I'm just under height. If I was 6'2" instead of 5'8" all this weight I haul around would look much better!
Congrats on setting a goal and going after it. I'm sure once you get to it you will want to keep going. Everybody I know that runs (for recreation) ends up keeping the habit and enjoys it.

It becomes an addiction. Plus it's a fabulous way to relieve stress. I've only been at it a couple of years. Four triathlons under my belt and I'm toying with the idea of a marathon next year. It really does become easier with each mile. My grandma used to say, "you gotta keep moving".

I'm running a 5k this Saturday as well. Hope you will have warmer weather than here in Mn.

You can do it !!! I routinely walk 10Km's almost every day, and easily achieve 1 kilometer every 10 minutes. I am 53 and have been overweight (medically obese, my BMI is 33 I believe) for a long time, still trying to lose weight. You are much younger than me, and you can do it !!!

If you keep it up, it gets easier and easier. I normally do a 13 Km walk these days, average around 2 hours 15 minutes.

Good luck on Saturday and thanks for the picture you posted hehehehe

Weather forecast

It's been cold and rainy all day today. Hopefully it stops dripping from the sky (like the forecast says). Still going to be chilly. Fortunately my first run was 23 degress + 27 mph wind - both colder than tomorrow morning is forecasted!

But holy mackerel - we have to be there at 7:15, 1 minute after sunrise?!

I'm already planning my ER visit now.

I would become an innie in that kind of weather. Not just Mr. Happy - literally all of me. (Yes, "literally". )

Sounds like a heat wave to me. This weekend it is supposed to be -15 below with wind chills to -41 below. Should get up close to 0 for the days though.

I won't be out running in it though.

I don't know how y'all do it. I'm unhappy under 60 and can't imagine under freezing or any stretch of time!
