I have been buying, installing and learning about water heaters since 1982. I have bought thousands and personally installed hundreds (maybe thousands) of them, and not once has the invoice for or the labeling of any one of these appliances stated it to be a HOT water heater — ever. In classes, if a plumber referred to one as a hot water heater, there was sure to be criticism (and chuckles), and sometimes a debate, which always lead to the final answer that they are, indeed, water heaters — not hot water heaters.
Go to any water heater manufacturer’s website and see if you can find one described as a hot water heater. For you Home Depot fans, go to their website and search “Hot Water Heater” and see what you find — amazingly, even they have it right.

They have to have that search for people who think there is such thing as a hot water heater! Do a search on Home Depot for cold water heaters and it brings up water heaters too.

Lol. I am sure. Truthfully there are stupid people everywhere.
FWIW they do a have a reheater of some sort that will heat 140 deg water to about 180 for commercial dish washing. We have one at Church.

It's actually in the DESCRIPTION, not just the search field. Look closely at his second pic, just above the 5 stars.

I see hot water heater...not cold water heater. Not disputing that it wouldn't be put in a description if that's what you mean.

interesting thread . so if i get this right you can have a hot water tank to store hot water , or a water heater that may or may not have a tank to store hot water . so 1. would be a hot water storage tank but cold water heater ,though i don't know why you would heat cold water it's more refreshing cold , and 2. if hot water is all ready hot then no need for a heater just the storage tanks . 3. a water heater may not be hot enough so you need a warm water heater to make it hot and a hot water tanks to store it . but then again a hot water heater keeps hot water hot in the tank so it does heat all ready hot water .

If it's a tankless, the water is never already hot yet the Home Depot still calls it a hot water heater LOL

The Dictionary
Ok, let’s try this:
Go to any of the online dictionaries and type “Hot Water Heater” into the search field and see what you find. After doing that, type “Water Heater” into the search field. For those of you who don’t believe the internet is a reliable source for important information such as this (yet, somehow, and for some reason you are reading this post), pull your dictionary from your library shelf and first flip through the “H” pages, then start looking through the “W” pages.

Agree, but why was she stirring it? Do we really know for sure that it was water in that pot? She may have been hot, but was she really heating water?

Actually, my first thought was “Hey, that Electric water heater is the one I use the most. Nice water heater!” Then I noticed the three vessels in the other pic and wondered which would provide the best recovery rate, but then I considered the maintenance cost of the two similar vessels versus that of the one with the spoon in it and I then came to the final conclusion that the electric water heater in the one pic would be the best choice for me. At least the electric water heater will come with a minimum 6-year warranty.

She was frying bacon...that’s the reason for the tall pan... keeping the spatter down.

Whatever the temperature is, you will use a water heater to heat it. A water heater will heat water no matter the temperature, you will never need a Hot water heater.

Hot water heater
I worked in the ER for 35 years. The newspapers, administrators, etc., always talked about “over crowding.” Whatever that is/was. It’s crowded, yes. Over crowding makes it seem like crowded or crowding is OK, or the norm. If it’s empty, can it be “under empty?”
