What was your first car?

Was reading another discussion, talking about old cars we used to own.

My first car was a 1977 VW Golf GTI. Not a Rabbit, as they were called in the US back in the day, but an actual euro-spec "brought-over-from-Germany" Golf. Instead of the anemic 1.6L engine with Bosch mechanical injection, it had a 1.8 that some maniac fitted with 2 weber 2bbl carbs. Parts were sometimes a little fussy to get, but man that thing would run. The speedo only read out in KPH, so I never really had any idea how fast I was going. That fact even got me out of a ticket once. It had 60 series tires on all for corners (rare in that day) and handled like a scared cat on carpet. It also had headlights that could cut thru lead. I was forever getting flashed with highbeams.

My brother had a 1977 TransAm, and the road from our house to town was mostly downhill and twisty. Going to town, I could easily leave him in the dust. Coming back, of course, that 6.6 would hand me my lungs, but only in the straight parts.

It was probably the most troublesome car I have ever owned, but I really wish I still had it. It was certainly the most fun to drive.

So what was your first car?

Tim

1972 used AMC Gremlin. 6 cyl. 3 speed non synchronized transmission.
Had about two years then jumped up to a 1973 AMC Gremlin "X" 258 CI, 3 speed synchronized trans, D-70-14 Goodyear tires, rally wheels. Wish I had it today.

1972 Grand Prix was first car, 1958 Chevrolet Apache 31 was first truck. Loved them both when I had them, but wouldn't trade my super duty for either one of them. Kinda like my Dad always said, folks talk about the good old days, but as far as I am concerned we are living in the good old days. Don't want to go back to 255 air conditioning in the heat of summer in Arkansas, 3 channels of TV, sleeping on the ground when camping, I like my cushy life style.

1966 Valiant convertible just like this and the same color...
Bought it used in 1968 when in Fitzsimmons Hospital, Denver CO and was the second biggest POS I ever owned. (First was a 1972 Dodge Demon; never Chrysler again.)

Mine was a 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 - 260ci V8 with a 3 speed on the column. Bought it in 1976 for $400. Had 60K miles on it and I put another 30K miles on it the first year I had it.

64 Mercury Comet: 3 speed on column, non-syncro, anemic 6, bad main bearings. I'd almost hit my thigh in first, brush the roof liner in second. Real POS. Next was a 65 Mustang which I had until I bought a 68 AMC Javelin. The AMC is the one I wish I still had.

I had a well used 1977 Ford 3/4 ton 4X4. Bought from a county auction. It was used in the salt marshes to track mosquito larva development.

That thing was so rusted there were holes in the floorboard.

But it had tons of power!

1959 Edsel pink with a white top. Rarely had to change oil, just keep adding as it either leaked or burned a quart a week. 63 Chevy Impala SS 409, 4 speed (wish I still had it now) then moved up to a 67 GTO convertible. Started a family and moved into station wagons and vans..

1968 VW Karman Ghia. It was orange with all the body lines outlined in white pin striping and it was UGLY. Someone had a cb antenna on the roof but removed it before I got it and they stuck a cork in the hole. According to my DW, my first son was conceived in that car!! I am a pretty good mechanic so it ran like a "raped ape" but looked like hell. It caught on fire one day and I jumped out and watched it burn to the ground.

1st car I ever bought was in 1969, a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, red, white manual rag top,3 speed w/ 289. Black interior with bench seats (rare). My dad made me get rid of it when I went into the Army in 1970
