Where to camp on gulf
We are looking for a campground on the water on the Gulf Coast (Mississippi?) for a couple of weeks in Feb or March. DW wants to be on the water so she can sit on a sandy beach. Anyone know of any nice spots?

We stayed a few days at the Silver Slipper Casino in Waveland MS....not really in the thick of things on that stretch of the coast but was quite...We were there in mid March of this year.......We were backed up on the campground side that allowed us to see the water out the back of the 5th wheel.

Buccaneer state park is just a couple miles away, and do allow camping on the grass sites right across Hwy 90; again not much of a beach though

We spent spring break at buccaneer state park this year. We had a full hookup site which was large and level. Bath houses were kept very clean.
The campground was wiped out by Katrina so most everything there is new. There is a waterpark onsite but it was not open for the season when we were there.

I'm thinking you can't see the beach from Gulf State Park. We have stayed at Big Lagoon SP about 10 miles east of GSP, not on the beach either but much more secluded, screened sites, a walk out thru the glade and the water just a short bike ride away.

We are starting out from upstate NY. We had thought to head south and get on the Natchez Trace. We drove part of it last trip and it was a great. Thought we would do the whole thing this time.

I recommend going a bit further east to Panama City Beach. You guys will be gone before spring break starts, and there are two excellent state parks...
St Andrew's State Park
St. Andrews State Park (Panama City, FL): Address, Phone Number, Top-Rated Beach Reviews - TripAdvisor
St Joseph Peninsula Beach
St. Joseph Peninsula State Park (Port Saint Joe, FL): Address, Phone Number, Top-Rated Beach Reviews - TripAdvisor
Both have excellent beaches, nearby fishing and even some snorkeling. I really had a great week at each park. We liked St Joe's better, it was a little less crowded. I think you would enjoy either park.

Thanks everyone. We have no time table anymore so we can try a lot of them. Wanderlost, you are right about being before spring break. Last year not only did we hit spring break in some places but also biker week. Had trouble finding campsites in many places so we just kept on movin'. This year we would like to settle for a few days.

St Andrews is right near town. You have the benefits of a PERFECT beach, but still have access to the marina and in-town activities like the boardwalk, mall and amusement parks (all <10 mins away). Shell Island is worth checking out, there are ferries leaving right from the campground.
St Joe's Beach is much more secluded. It's about 30 minutes to town (St Joe's), and about an hour from Panama City Beach. The advantage of St Joe's is that it is really spectacular. There are fewer campsites, more beaches, and excellent snorkeling in the bay.
If you want maximum quiet and more nature, hit St Joe. If you want access to a city, but still clean facilities and a beach that isn't crowded, St Andrews is probably better. Safe travels!

Very very nice beach(s) in the park. The Gulf side waves can be very smooth or a little brisk and rough. What is really nice is the large sandy beach that is inside the jetty that leads to the marina. Nice still water that you can swim in and relax by for hours.
