Woman Follows GPS and Drives Down Boat Launch Into lake

Police in Tobermory, Ont., pulled a red car from the harbour early Friday morning after a Kitchener woman followed instructions from her GPS and drove down a boat launch and into the water.

Ontario Provincial Police said the woman was following her GPS "when she took a wrong turn into Little Tub Harbour" late Thursday night.

It was raining, dark and foggy at the time.

Combining "weather conditions and the driver being new to the area, a fully submerged vehicle was the result," police said in a release.

Apparently not. There was fog and pouring rain. The Harbour is at top of the Bruce Peninsula where Georgian Bay and Lake Huron meet. If she turned right she would have driven on to the ferry MS Chee Chee Man..

This is gods country! Spectacular.

Let's not be too hasty in passing judgement here.

As stated in the police report, there was fog and other weather conditions present plus the driver not being familiar with the area plus following the GPS prompts and we all know they aren't all ways accurate, this could simply be the result of several small things adding up to this accident.

Last trip I was on coming home and GPS led me down the wrong road, I told DW it's the wrong way but she told me if I wasn't going to follow it then what good was it. I had to make a sharp left turn and the dumb thing was I knew it was the wrong way to go. It worked out, I hate to think what if it had been dark.

Reminds me of when Apple dumped their GPS provider (I think it was Garmin) a few years ago, and decided to use their own GPS system for the iPhones.

Seems that, in Alaska, the Apple software, when routing people to the Anchorage airport, took them onto the main airport runway. After having to disrupt airplane traffic for an hour or so, the police realized what was happening and put a blockade on the approach road with a sign that directed drivers to the correct road.

These electronic marvels are definitely not perfect!

Talking GPS snafus

Reminds me of using my new portable GPS and I knew the way to Kennedy Airport in NYC. It was directing me to take exit 6, recalculating, take exit 5, recalculating, take exit 4, recalculating..... It was obviously directing me to runways rather than what I knew would be Exit 1 into the airport. And an idiot would have gotten off at these wrong exits and entered the city streets looking for JFK.

After 21 years and 2.6 million miles on the highways and biways of the eastern half of North America, trust we when I say they drive among us.

I was accident free, but there were a lot out there trying their best to mess me up.
