Step support
One of the rewards of never throwing anything away is that you can always find something to help you fabricate something. I found a bed frame support leg in my one of my boxes of metal stuff. It's a 1 1/4" tube with threaded caps pressed in each end. The threads take a 5/8" threaded rod. I picked up a standard hinge at Lowes, some spare 5/8" rod from my junk box, and made the foot from another piece of spare metal. I'll mount the hinge to the bottom of the first step. The hinge allows you to fold the leg down for support and up against the bottom of the step for storage. 1/18/14...fabricated and painted the support. Now all I have to do is mount and figure out how to secure the support for storage. "Watch this space."
Finished product in extended position
I used stainless 1/4" carriage bolts (and hardware) that fit perfectly in the step slots.
Final product in storage position
Better pic of support foot latched in place.
Closeup of the latch...found it in the hardware section at Lowes. I think it is used to hold screen windows in.
The finished product
Bolted thru existing slots in step so that I did not have to drill any holes in the step.
Support painted and ready to be installed. First rough install.
Painting the support
Had to trim one side of hinge to prevent attaching bolts from interfering with the leg folding down to the support position.
Foot welded to 5/8" threaded rod screwed up into the support leg. Once installed, the leg can be adjusted in or out by turning the rod.
Hinge welded to end of support leg
Threaded end cap in support leg (5/8" threads)
Bed frame leg support and scrap metal for foot. Why I never throw anything away. Found this in my box of unusually scrap stuff.
