Hitch Anatomy

I'm a newbie to weight distribution hitches. Can someone tell me the purpose of this bolt on the bottom of my hitch. It was only finger tight and no jam nut to hold it in any preset or adjusted position. I was not told about this feature when I bought the trailer and hitch package from the previous owner. I got a thorough lesson on connecting and preloading the hitch but this part wasn't mentioned at the time.

Appears to control the angle of the hitch head which is essential for getting the weight distribution set correctly. Recommend downloading the hitch installation manual from the manufacturers website. Intuitively this bolt should have a jam nut so it stays set. Since it's finger tight I strongly suspect the hitch was never set properly, maybe not even close.

The washers will give you the ball angle and this bolt will take the slack out of the system so the washers will not fall off.
In my system (Curt) that bolt needs to be torqued at 50 lbft .
In the below article you have a summary of the reason for that angle, but basically the more the better.

Your hitch manual will help. My E2 says to tighten 1/4 turn past contact. They do need to be checked, because as the washers get compressed, it will loosen up.

anyone notice this particular model....has no washers. That bolt is the adjustable "Stop". When the pitch is set, that bolt holds it in place. My Equalizer had the Washers you adjusted and my sons just has the bolt that is tighten...same as the photo.

My e2 has the washers but would still vibrate loose, even with lots of torque. Put a little Locktite on - not the never take apart kind - and no problems since.
