Step light on while battery switches off?

When our toilet died on our first long trip a couple weeks ago, we shut off all the power hoping to reset the commode. I noticed that little orange light above the steps was still on even though we had disconnected shore power and turned off the battery isolation switches for both the truck and cabin. So how can that be? Is it just the oddball thing wired in between the battery and isolation switch? If so though, what other things are wired like that and how are we supposed to truly isolate the batteries for storage?

On GT motorhomes with Kwikee steps the steps are fused directly off the coach batteries so they extend whenever the door is opened (safety issue). The step light also comes on automatically but will extinguish automatically within about 5 minutes or so if door is left open. Don't know what steps you have or even if they are electric but if they are it may be the same for your steps. Just a note.

Mine works when plugged in to power or generator is running if I the lights turned on that operate the outside handle also.

The only way to shut off the power to our electric steps is to physically disconnect the house battery cable. Definitely a safety issue. Stepping out when the stairs are not deployed is definitely not recommended. I'm not certain how long the light remains lit.

^^This^^ steps must be wired direct to battery as a fail safe. In case you take off, they need to come IN no matter if power is on or not.

If you are putting the unit in storage for a while...either remove the black battery wire OR put an on/off switch on that cable. This completely eliminates any battery drain from anywhere. Don't forget to put the black wire back on before you hitch up and drive.
