You answered your own question. If you are pulling a heavier trailer the Diesel may be the better way to go......lighter trailer gas is fine but personal preference is more of it.....

He's my comparisons
When I owned my 03 Dodge with the Hemi I got 8-9 mpg towing our 25 ft fifth wheel & 14 mpg solo.....
Now I have a 05 Dodge duelly with a Cummins towing a 35.5 ft fifth wheel...
