You have to measure and allow for fittings. Suburban makes a 4 gallon model that is shorter.

That's how I was using it and when it worked it was great. The problem was the water heater would work intermittently and then I wasted...

I could have done that if a return line could be plumbed to the fresh water tank. It could not unfortunately.
