2019-2020 Ram CP4 Recall

The My Mopar app is invaluable in keeping track of the RAM. I also had the recall pop up on my app for my 2019 chassis.

Yes that Mopar App is great and my 2020 chassis is part of the cp4 pump recall as well.

Since the parts are not available to do the recall repair work shall we not drive our RV's?

If you read the details, the failure rate is about 4% of a quarter millions units. I have not seen any posts on the Dynamax forum or Facebook group that detail a failure. Keep in mind this is just units built in a little more than a year span of time.

Depends how risk averse you are. Since there is no known date by which time you can be assured the replacement part is available and a service visit can be scheduled, you may be waiting a very long time (up to a year) before you would use it again...OR drive it until it fails and deal with the failure when it happens. To do this you need (and I have) a Plan B by investigating what you would do in the event of a break down on every route you drive...who you gonna call.

Interesting to me is that the number of failures is quite low. None have been reported on this forum and I have only seen one on a couple of other RAM forums. This may be a mileage issue or the use of lower grade fuels amongst commercial users that have put themselves on the leading edge. Many have commented that the CP4 has a known propensity to fail based on its use by Ford and Duramax but again the stats are not easily available as in MTBF either in miles, hours or months from delivery; and total fails relative to deliveries. It might be like Covid, a figment of imagination, until it was not; and then a long delay with a litany of "cures".

Before dismissing fuel lubricity it would be interesting to know how many failures happened to folks using fuel with a high percentage of biodiesel. Aside from differences in BTU and cetane ratings I would not be surprised if some decisions for fuel blends were made by refiners in instances where the ability to maintain low sulfur PPM to meet EPA requirements when there were problems with amine treaters scrubbing the sulfur resulted in use of more biodiesel in the blend affecting the lubricity which largely effects pumps. Just a thought.

I believe you have a good point. Lubricity is a major issue in the use of SF from bio products in aerospace. Its one of the reasons why any SF segment of more than an hour gets celebrated, is considered risky (no paying passengers) and the refining and mixing process has yet to be defined to a replicable standard. I am also of the opinion that the last thing the user group, fuels suppliers and regulators want to hear is that being "green" is going to destroy your machinery and be unsafe. better to keep it under the rug while looking for a solution.

If 10% of the truck users were to lose the use of their trucks, we might get a response but otherwise, not so much. Especially as the plaintiff's bar will have to fork out major money for up front research to be able to sustain a class action case.

I spoke to 2 Ram dealers about the recall. I asked them how do I get on the list to get whatever replacement parts are needed to resolve the recall??
Both said that at present this is no "solution" to the "recall"....... obviously no parts....
My guess is that this is a recall in name only...its going to be a situation where after you break down, you can point to the recall or the dealer will recognize it....then they will get parts for replacement...and only then...

So I guess Ford should be not far behind with this. My 2018 FORD has one of the cp4`s. Personally I`m not willing to wait moths to a year for the repair and drive my truck cross country with this thing that might explode. Just imagine the hassle if this happens to you on a trip, the cost ,the delays, the nagging wife, living in a parking lot for who knows how long, did I say the hassle? There several companies that make replacement pumps that are not prom to this problem. I`m going to look into buying one and putting it in. At my expense of course but don't care. And I have been using a fuel lubricater to make up for the lack of said in our fuel which is suppose to help.

Most of the big fuel additives have a so called lubersizer in them but the amount is the question and is it enough to stave off a failure of the pump. The cost will be the determining factor for the companies to put this in their products so they can say theirs is best. I personally don`t trust them. But there one company that sells just the lubersizer, pretty much guaranties your getting enough product to do any good. This is what I use.

Lots of reviews and dose it work? Don`t know but haven`t had a pump failure. Contaminated fuel is the number one denial of warranty for this from Ford. Yep it`s expensive but don`t want to have a failure in the middle of Iowa.

I am using their Hot Shots Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment at the suggestion of a writer in the TDR Magazine as a precaution

Here watch this. The truth? I`d like to think so, sounds good anyway. But the alternative is to do nothing and hope you aren`t the one standing when the music stops. I`ll use it because I have no idea what else to do. In my friends circle 2 pumps have gone out, one was covered by his insurance company cause Ford says contaminated fuel and water did the damage. The other the jury is still out but they took a fuel sample and sent it off. And we know how that is going to turn out.
