A "roll your own" recipe for a first aid kit

Quick Clot, or some form of blood clotting agent should be included. Severe bleeding can be controlled with these agents while Help is responding....we end up in remote area with no cell service. Help could be 3 hours away. Most pharmacy's will carry these as well as online options.

Great idea! I just made our first aid kit yesterday. Never thought to include that. Years ago, we camped and I cut myself on a brand new knife. We couldn't find an urgent care anywhere! Those butterfly stitches that stores sell might be another good idea now that I'm thinking about it....

Great Post. I to was a backpacker and hope to do it again this spring. I have but one comment. Don't forget to periodically go through your first aid kit and replace anything that is out of date, used up, or worn out. I keep enough supplies in my day pack to spend the night....just in case. Once long ago, I finally checked and I had out of date meds, band ages that had degraded in the heat and no longer stuck, an empty Tylenol bottle, etc. Now I annually check my pack to make sure my first aid kit is ready to go.

And don't forget to check the expiration dates on your ointments, liquids, etc. I always check mine before our first trip out and usually find something that's outdated. I know some people will say that the expiration date doesn't really matter, and maybe it doesn't for SOME things, but I don't take the chance and restock anything that's outdated. ( Probably the nurse in me...lol )
