Anyone have experience replacing the front vent on a 21DS with a MaxxAir fan?

As above, I am wondering if anyone has done this - particularly whether there is power stubbed to the vent opening already.

We ordered the trailer with the fan in the bathroom vent & it works great. We're looking to update the front vent now, since I need to do some re-sealing on the roof anyway.

I have the new fan, and all of the stuff that I need to seal it to the opening, I just would prefer to not take it apart and then discover that I need something that I don't have on hand.

Thanks!

I don't have your unit but was the the front vent fan an option when ordering?
If so, the wires are typically there. (was on two previous units we upgraded)
You can also pull the interior ceiling trim (usually 4 screws) and look for wires.

I honestly can't remember - that was 5 years ago.

The only thing stopping me from pulling the trim ring is that it is currently caulked to the ceiling. If I'm going to go that far I may as well dive in and just do it.

Sure about that?

Sure about that? I can't imagine anyone caulking the interior shroud.

If you currently have a fan in place it should be a fairly simple install. I did mine and pretty straight forward. Later RJD

This trailer comes stock with two roof vents. One in the bathroom and the other over the Murphy bed. Just your standard "crank-em-open" vents.

When we ordered our trailer we got the option to have the MaxxAir fan factory installed in the bathroom (in place of the standard vent). I don't remember now if there was an option for a second factory-installed fan. If there was, we didn't order it.

I want to add another fan, just like the one in the bathroom, over the bed. that one currently has a standard vent. I am hoping to find out whether anyone else with this model has done the replacement and can tell me if there is wiring already there.

Despite Larry-NC's incredulousness, the inside trim ring is indeed caulked to the ceiling, so there is no way that I can see to find this out without some level of destructive disassembly.

If this isn't caulk, then I have been using that word incorrectly my entire life...

Somewhat belated follow up -

The weather that we have in the Pacific Northwest isn't really very conducive to opening a 14 inch hole in your roof during the winter and spring. When it wasn't raining (it was usually raining) it tended to be too cold to work with the butyl tape, Eternabond, and Dicor. When we did get occasional semi-nice weather, we used it for camping, so this project got moved to the back burner.

I installed a soft start kit on my AC today, and I am hoping to install the MaxxAir fan tomorrow.

This afternoon I pulled down the beauty ring on the inside (broke my heart a little to cut that gorgeous caulk job!), and found good news and bad news.

The bad news is that there is not wiring stubbed out in the opening for the purpose of installing my fan.

The good news is that there *is* dc wiring up there.

My trailer has what amounts to two "zones of overhead lights. The main interior light switch controls the puck lights over the sink area, back by the fridge, and in the main part of the living area. There is a second switch near the couch armrest on the entry door side that controls two puck lights that are above the couch or Murphy bed (depending on whether the bed is up or down).

There is a wire from each of these circuits in the vent opening. I can tap into either of these wires for power to the fan. Only downside is that it will only work when the associated light switch is on.

Most likely, I will tap into the couch/bed lights circuit. We tend to leave that switch on all the time while we are camping, and turn each puck light on or off as needed - so the fan should have power all of the time.

It wasn't what I was hoping to see, but I think it will work

I had the same experience adding a second vent fan on our 2002 Northwood Nash. First line I tapped was switched. Fortunately I groped a little deeper and found another which was unswitched.

Got it done today. Well...done except for the fact that I ordered the wrong cover for it - and if I had paid attention I would have noticed that the cover that I did buy had a piece of paper taped to it that said that it was specifically *not* for the MaxxFan that I bought at the same time.

That was almost 8 months ago though, so I suspect that I am outside of Amazon's return window.....

So, now I will order the correct one.

The install went mostly as expected. I have a pile of these cool little nylon scrapers that I use in my work. They are made for picking the edges of car wraps when removing the wrap - without scratching the paint. They work really well for separating Dicor from the roof membrane. They are stiff enough to scrape with, but not sharp enough to cut the membrane. And if you get too spunky with them, they just break.

I *hate* butyl tape. It's like being attacked by a snot monster. Sticks to *everything*. Trying to get it off of my gloves reminds me of the videos of cats trying to walk with tape on their paws. Or like a toddler trying to get a booger off of their finger. Stuff works, but I hate it.

I put the outer part down on two layers of butyl with the corner joints lapped, then put 4 inch Eternabond over all of the screw heads and onto the roof all the way around. I'll give it a couple of days to set & then flood it with Dicor too.

As mentioned above, there was not dedicated power in the vent opening, just two 12v wires going to puck lights on two different circuits. I spliced into the lights over the bed, and the fan can only be on when that switch is on. I reckon we can get used to that.

I'm glad I decided to do it, because even though the old sealant looked good, and there was no evidence of leaking inside, several of the screws holding the old vent in place had rust on their threads.

Another project checked off the list! I try really hard to turn every repair into an upgrade.

Qwkynuf,

I replaced my bedroom vent with a Maxxair fan this week. I ran power from the rear bathroom fan to the front by taking down the air conditioner cover to access the center of the trailer ceiling. I use an electric wire fish tape to pull the wires. There is an opening that appears to run the length of the trailer in the ceiling.

Ha! Probably the best/right solution, but I just went with wiring into the light circuit.
