I want to do a "background check" on someone I fear we will have to involuntarily interact with, who appears less than savory.

I see dozens of website that claim to have all sorts of information on everyone. Most of them feel very scammy and slimy. There are enough similarities between many of them including identical spelling mistakes, that I wonder if all the dozens of sites are just different fronts for one or two companies.

Has anyone every used any of these services that you would actually recommend?

On the flip side, any that should be avoided. I know that answer to that is "all of them" but assuming that is not an option...

Thanks in advance!

Ask a local Property Management company in your area who they use. They do background checks quite often.

Our local clerk of court has a way to pay a small fee to grant online access for 24 hours to run criminal or civil records but it only applies to records for our particular parish (county to the rest of the US). You may can go to your local courthouse and access it for free. Worth giving them a call to see. I've used it a few times for employee checks.... and to see if property was mortgaged.

Good idea. Those outfits that come up with your random Google search IMO are scams. I used one once, purportedly a one time search and fee, became a monthly charge. I had to have the CC company cut them off and arbitrate.

Apparent VISA is a bible reading company and they "cut the baby in half" and only charged me for half the charge.

My answer is NOPE! Avoid all of the "on-line" services.

I'd check with your attorney and see who they use for investigative services. Fortunatly we have a friend who is a PI. When I asked him, his answer was "so what do you want to know?".

Most folks lives are totally an open book. You think we are privledged to any degree of privacy? NOPE not in the least. You have a SS number, a bank account, a credit card, ever had a job, filed any form of tax return, ever had a speeding or parking ticket? Forget about security cameras, license plate readers, store security cameras. Your life is an open book. Ever get on line and "look at something you shouldn't be looking at?". The computer has and IP address and even from that, one can tell what version of software is being used, what web brouser is being used and on and on.

Folks are up in arms these days about invasion of privacy. Bottom line, we have no privacy, none, nope, nada, etc.

Bottom line, the information is out there for harvesting. Just gotta find the right person to do the harvesting.

In NJ, criminals are a protected class. Getting criminal records is hard here, even police officers can't get access to them without citing a bonafide criminal investigation, so I don't know how they online companies could get them. At least you can look up an inmate on the DOC website, but even that is cleared one year after serving sentence.

Thank you for all the suggestions and ideas. We got what we needed using "social engineering;" people who know the person in real life, colleagues, neighbors, ex's, etc usually know them better than the data brokers and many are willing to talk.

Not sure what surprises me more the fact the one felt the need for background check for a might have interaction with someone or that no one even inquired about why. I worked in corrections for 12 years I know the type but it’s not illegal for criminals to conduct business or have a job buy stuff ect. I assume your business doesn’t have a background check requirement like law enforcement or education if so you wouldn’t be asking about how to get one.

Thank you for your perspective.

I kept it vague because I really do not want to air my personal life online any more than I have to. But I do not recall saying anything about this being business related in any way.

As for the rights for "criminals," no one wants to work with a criminal.

I suspect you might agree with me on that point, because I suspect you were talking about the rights of ex criminals; ones who were convicted of committing crimes but have since been deemed reformed after a trip or two or ten through the system. They do have the right to engage in most, but not all, areas of work. But that exclusion is only as good as people's ability to verify their background.

Completely unrelated to my situation, and on the rights of ex criminals... I am not aware of anything in the law preventing someone who has been convicted multiple times of serially embezzling funds from multiple employers from being hired to a position where they again have access to company funds and the ability to steal them. But if you are the employer, would you hire them knowing their background?

As I said I didn’t feel like it was business related or else you would already have a company for the background checks. I don’t mind and even think it’s prudent for companies that deal in finance to run background checks when I sold cars I had to pay $35 for my own background check. Even applying to rent an apartment background check. It was the having interaction with

As for working with criminals yes a their are several that don’t ever deserve to get out and society will be better for it. Others realize they did wrong but now trying to make amends. Background checks only tell what they did not who they are. This coming from be tough on crime person
That said I will bow out and if you rescue dogs as you handle indicates thank you for helping

Criminal check

In Pa we have an app called PA docket. You can type a name in and it will tell you if they had any criminal cases. Not sure if all states have something similar.

Most any employee hiring as well as property management companies do background checks all the time. Call a property manager. Oh, it will be much more difficult if you are not entering into some kind of professional relationship. As a civilian you just can’t say I want a background check on someone unless you have a friend in law enforcement or higher a PI.

Forty years later and my wife is still upset with my deceased mother, who worked in the credit collections division for a large retailer. My mom let it slip once that she ran credit checks on anyone I dated for a while.

Ahhh, the good old days! :)

After my divorce, I was still in touch with my divorce lawyer for a few years. I the lawyer run a check on every serious prospect, including my current wife. A few months into the relationship, she opened up about some of the messy details of her own divorce. I had to pretend I did not already know all the details including things she was leaving out.

20 years on, I think she gotten over it. At least she has not brought it up in over a decade.

Funny how they can remember things we did 35 years ago, but not things they did.
