So, my wife just had major back surgery and wants to camp in the summer. I'm certain that our current mattress with 2 foam toppers won't work for her, and am taking suggestions for what others with similar needs have done.

Thanks in Advance!

I would have thought for back stuff ............stiffer is better?
not sure never had back surgery.

are thinking softer or firmer?

after adding a topper ........... I still get stiff / sore around the hip area
looking to CUT a section out of the plywood bed board
and replacing it with curved slats to add some spring-i-ness
making a hybrid bed ..... some slats some existing board
planning only to cut about a 1/3 or the area.. where the main body mass is normally situated
and making sure can still lift the bed up to access under it...

Possibly not relevant to an RV, but if you can work one in, I would try using a recliner chair. I have had the extreme back problems since my 50s. I found my best method of sleep and healing was by using a recliner chair with chair arms. You position the chair settings the way you like it and sleep in the most ergonomic position possible, which is on your back.

All your appendages have good unrestricted blood flow and being on your back doesn't restrict your breathing like it does when laying on your side. There is absolutely no need or desire to twist and turn at night in your sleep and aggravating your back injury further. The arms of recliner stop you from turning and twisting in the night and further injuring your back. Best of luck, I understand your wife's pain.

Check with your surgeon's office and see if a Sleep Number would work. It's possible that the adjustability might good for relieving pressure, but then again it might not.

I was going to suggest the same……but if the OP has an RV size mattress, which is often much different than in a real home…..Sleep Number may be a no-go. The OP never provided the mattress size he’s hoping to rectify.

OP states Queen in the title. Our r-pod uses a full-sized queen, so we can use a residential replacement without cutting.

We put a 10” house mattress in ours and then a 3” topper on top, we really like that set up

Of course, everyone is a little different but after my first back surgery - I inquired with the neurosurgeon about the mattress that would be best - hard or soft of medium. I was told to sleep on whatever I was most comfortable with. Since I had a waterbed, I slept on that for over several decades until it needed to be replaced.
I laid on several mattress in stores but laying on one for 10 minutes or less doesn't give a true 'feel' for the mattress. There are no 'try out & return for refund' mattresses either.
I finally purchased a sleep number mattress that came with a 30 day free trial and I've always slept well even after having the 2nd back surgery and also since the wife has had back surgery now too.
We've had a sleep number bed for over 25 years and it's the best possible mattress to sleep on - bar none. I'd NEVER go back to a standard mattress no matter who made it.

In an RV, you could use a Sleep Number Bed. We have an FR3 and we setup two single Sleep Number beds in place of the mattress. We have them at home and they work fine in the RV. Provided you have the 120v connection and WiFi.

While I was still living in a condo I fell and had vertebral fusion of 6 thoracic vertebrae. The only time I could be out of the clamshell brace was when I was in bed. We have been sleeping on a Sleep Number bed for many years and my neurosurgeon said that I could definitely use the Sleep Number, adjusting so it did not provide any 'hot spots' while I was in bed. When we moved into the RV we replaced the rv queen mattress with our Sleep Number. Would not sleep on anything else.

I used to think I needed a stiff mattress and we got a sleep number years ago. Then I found out I sleep best on a soft mattress. After back surgery I slept well on it but my wife never really liked it much but we both ended up on 30-35 all the time. Then I got a Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe for the motorhome in the softest option as I could not track down a sleep number for the motorhome. We both loved it so much we tossed the sleep number and got a Cal King for the house.

You can get soft, medium and firm. We got the pillow top for the house but not the motorhome but I kinda wish I got that for the motorhome also. Highly recommended.

Hi I know what you are talking about, I have 3 fractured vertebrae.
We purchased an Alex Bloom bed for our Isata 3
They can make the bed any size you want, it is a split adjust adjustable bed, that you can adjust the firmness. They advertise every month in the FMCA Magazine.

Hi, My husband had back surgery in November and, since we are full time RVers, we had to get a better mattress with an adjustable frame for our 2023 Georgetown GT5. We contacted axelbloombeds.com and they custom made the frame and mattress to meet our needs. He slept in the recliner for the first few weeks after surgery and now is getting a much better rest on our new axel bloom system. Best wishes and safe travels!

I don't see what kind of unit the OP has and the relative platform for the bed. Most RV's, other than the larger motor homes, wouldn't support a sleep number without a number of additional modifications, especially to the struts lifting the bed. Our smaller TT wouldn't even support a residential queen without new struts which can't be replaced with stronger ones on our small Wolf Pup as they were custom made for Forest River (per the strut manufacturer). Just something to consider when factoring any additional weight a new mattress may add.

I have arthritis in my back, we have Sleep Number in the house and in the RV, they do make RV sized mattresses. I can’t imagine sleeping on anything else and being as comfortable as I am on the Sleep Number.

I agree with looking into Sleep Number. We moved to a queen SN about 8 years ago. I adjust for my 83 year-old failing back (and have to sleep on my side because of sleep apnea) and DW does her thing on her side.

It will come down to whats comfortable for your body type. Too stiff for your weight and your hips and shoulder will raise, too soft and will dip. I havent had surgery, but been dealing with sciatica for many years. Best thing I did was go to a bed place and lay on my side and back and had my wife take pictures of my spine alignment. With that said, we have a Brooklyn bedding in our camper that has done well. A little soft, but it came with the camper and seems to do ok for our weekly trips
