Champion 2400 generator fuel extender gas cap or kit

Hello, everyone. I'm currently running a Champion 2400 (model #201271) generator for camping and storm power outage backup. The machine is running great on both propane and gas. However, considering that I am in Florida I am wanting to add a gas extender kit to my backup supplies to prepare for any potential hurricane power outages that might last for longer than a few hours. My hurricane survival basic power needs of a small a/c and small refrigerator are at the limit of the generator's capacity and running on gas and at full tilt the small one gallon gas tank can only give me between five and six hours of use with a full tank.

I have contacted several manufacturers of gas tank fuel cap extenders but nobody seems to make anything specifically for the Champion 2400. I also contacted Champion directly with the idea of purchasing one or two extra gas tank fuel caps and creating my own gas tank extender cap. However, Champion is out of stock of that specific gas tank fuel cap (part #16730-000012) until December 17th. Yikes!

Has anyone here been able to source a fuel tank gas extender cap that will work with the Champion 2400? I would love to be able to buy a metal machined cap that is specifically built for fuel extension and not have to go through the process of diy'ing a solution from scratch…especially if I can't even get my hands on a spare fuel tank gas cap to MacGyver something for another 2 months.

My ideal is a setup like the BERGS but I've had no luck reliably confirming compatibility with my particular genny as it seems the Champion 2400 uses a very particular gas cap. Has anyone been able to make this kit work with the 2400? Any other kit or just the extender cap sources?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Honda eu2000/2200 generators have fuel pumps, so an external tanks fuel will be drawn in.

If the Champion has the gas tank over the carburator, it won't have a fuel pump. It's gravity feed. That means the external tank will need to be elevated above the carburator intake and tapped from the bottom for fuel to flow without trying to keep a siphon going.

Hey thanks for the reply.

So I thought about that when thinking through my idea for the actual reservoir tank and my plan was to use a square or rectangle can so that I could situate the tank above my generator as needed so that the stock tap was always at the lowest point of the can. The smaller fuel tanks usually have odd shapes unless you specifically look for one that's square or rectangular…which is exactly what I would need in order to be able to rotate it so that the tap was at the bottom…thus helping gravity to feed the fuel. I have found that a Sceptre 6 gallon unit (pictured) most closely resembles what I need when sat vertically. That unit has a straw inside attached to the outtake valve but that could easily be removed to allow the tap to sit south and provide adequate fuel feed unobstructed (I'd probably get shorted the last inch of gas since the valve sits about an inch from the edge of the can). It also has a vented intake/fill cap to alleviate expansion which is a plus. If that did not work plan B is to go with a rolling gas caddy which by design already has the outtake valve at 6 o'clock.

Either way my first problem to tackle is that I can't find an extender fuel tank gas cap for the generator. Most other components needed (external tank, marine fuel line, intake/outage fittings) are easily sourced but the generator specific extender cap is my problem.

I could ultimately 3D print one out of Nylon but I doubt a 3d printed solution would last much more than a few runs given the degrading nature of gas… even 3d printed out of nylon. It's odd to me that no one is manufacturing these extender caps yet for the 2400 and even more odd that Champion would use an odd size fuel cap for their generator gas tank.

Still searchin’....

You don't need a special cas cap, just swap in a new fuel line from the larger tank, right to the carburator.
