Differences between cupboard and cabinet:
  • Is “cupboard” American or British?

    • Design and Functionality: Cupboards are more versatile and can be found in various settings, storing a wide range of items. Cabinets are often more specialized and designed for specific storage needs.
    • Construction: Cupboards are typically standalone pieces of furniture, while cabinets can be built-in or separate.
    • Access: Cupboards are more open and may have doors or shelves for easy access. Cabinets have enclosed compartments and doors.

if you look at the word cupboard it is plainly just a shelf/board that holds cups.

then someone got the idea to put hooks under it so cups can be on the bottom plates on top of the board

Then someone decides to add walls around it.... hide it a bit AND you can put stuff at the top shelf you just invented

then someone one put door on it............... to stop stuff from falling out when you hit a bump

DIDN'T WORK!

Never worried if there was a distinction between the two. Everything is a cabinet as we never use the term cupboard. And now that I know there may be a difference, I still don't see myself using the word cupboard:)

As one who designed and sold kitchens for one of the big box stores, in the 5 product lines, there were no cupboards listed.

I like the other earlier description, where one has a board to which they place cups. Later fitted with cup hooks, hung cups by their handles under the shelf. :)
