I have a 2014 Rockwood Roo 233s. I just replaced the awning fabric. Otherwise, the awning was performing mechanically fine prior. The replacement went well and everything went back together as expected. Now the awning seems to fly open when I press the extend switch even if I let go. I have to hit retract to stop it. Once it is extended and I press retract it is a very slow crawl to retract. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? Seem a coincidence that the switch all of a sudden went bad during the fabric replacement, but I guess that could have happened. Not sure what else I could have done during the awning replacement that could have caused this. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, the torsion spring was pinned properly. This is the second one I've done so it wasn't a virgin experience which is why I'm a bit confused as to why this is happening.

Most electric awnings behave the same way in my experience. Slower coming back in. I have replaced my 9100 motor several times.
I miss the manual awnings!!

keep the shorepower and converter on....... when retracting
does it go faster?

Yes...
battery may need charging
or
check the battery connections for corrosion or if loose

This is shore power. I've got a local tech coming out this afternoon. I appreciate the responses. I'll let you know what he tells me.

Even with shore power, you usually need a good battery to add extra power to these electric awnings.

Please let us know what you find out.

We just replaced our fabric and have the exact same scenario as you described in this post. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

Awning won't retract Geo Pro G19FD 2020

My Dometic Awning came out and now won't retract unless I push on the motor side arms to help. I became concerned that it would fail when I was out camping and without a 10' ladder I'd be stuck. I have lubricated the arms, motor connection and nothing. I removed the cap and tried using the nut to retract the awning but it made a noise without doing anything so I quit and came to the Forum to look for answers.

Has anyone used the manual 3/8" nut to retract their awning? If so would you please give me the details such as clockwise, counterclockwise, how many turns before it starts to move, and does it make a little noise? Since I saw that it has a plastic worm drive gear I am very hesitant to move forward for fear of stripping it and paying $300+ for a new motor just to fix what I could have avoided screwing up had I gotten some advice!

Thanks!

9100 Awning comes in slow after replacing fabric with heavier fabric

Any update? I am experiencing the same thing on our 9100. RV repair shop replaced the fabric on mine. They use ShadePro, which feels like a thicker fabric than the OEM, and I was wondering if the spring needs an extra couple of rotations to help the motor. We are on a trip and when we get home I'll take it back to the shop, but was just curious if anyone else had tried to add a couple of turns to remedy this.

Did you wind the roller tube the wrong way ? sounds like your fighting the torsion spring . As the roller goes out it should add tension to the spring to help with retracting . seems with you it's adding tension when you retract which is why it's moves out very fast . When the spring has no tension it take about 13 full turns to load the spring up when awning is retracted . if you did not pin the torsion spring when replacing the fabric this would cause what you describe .

Awning winding direction

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know there were tension springs in the awning. My awning winds with the fabric on the top of the roller, I assume this is the correct direction. I can't the photo to orient properly, but it is shown retracting.

Mine goes out normal speed, but crawls like a snail going back in. Has been this way since new, even after Dometic replaced the whole roller tube/awning material. They told me I was only getting 8v to the motor.

if your style has the manual nut to retract then it doesn't have a torsion spring and relies on the motor to do it all . these have a tendency to be slow on retract . weak voltage , to small of supply wires to the unit , and just plain bad motor design with these new dometics

My awning rolls out faster than coming back in. Always has. I think it’s because I’m usually in a hurry to relax and enjoy adult beverages, but in no hurry to pack up and leave.

I have a Dometic 9200 series awning and also have to push on the motor arm to get the awning to retract. I have lubricated and done everything I can see to help it but it only gets worse. My Geo Pro 19 is a 2020 model and the awning has never retracted greater than slow. I have 2 questions I haven't see the answer to:
Is the picture you show the correct position for retracting?
To manually retract the awning does the nut turn clockwise or counterclockwise?
Have safe and happy travels!

Keep in mind, that when going out the awning is assisted by the gas struts. When going in, the motor has to roll-up the awning and compress the gas struts at the same time. It take more effort. I make it a point to always keep the strut cylinders clean. :nodding:

AHA! When you slide the awning end into the rain gutter on the RV, it has to be carefully centered. If you don't, as it rolls up, it will roll to one side until it drags on the arms. The extra drag can slow things down. You may need to re-center the awning.

The assist springs are linear. The tighter you wind them, the more torque it takes. And when going the other way, the more it unwinds, the less force it applies. You get some advantage because the tighter it winds, the less gravity (lift force) and more horizontal movement there is. You can't fight the physics.

Thank you for your replies! If I replace the motor, I guess when the shaft no longer adheres to the gear, not if...) are there recommendations for a new gear replacement or a better non-OEM motor?
