Good afternoon,

I'm replacing the fabric on my 9100 power awning. Everything is going pretty smoothly, until it comes time to wind up the spring (9 turns per the Dometic manual.) As I understand it the spring should be fully wound when the awning is extended, and the spring tension assists with retracting the awning. In other words, there should be little/ no tension on the spring when the awning is fully retracted.

The way the manual describes it is exactly the opposite of what I have described above, so it has me confused. Somebody give me a sanity check here- does the spring tension assist with extending the awning or retracting it?

Thanks.

Yes, the spring tension assists in retracting the awning. I've seen it done backwards and it powered the awning out on a manual awning.

I realize this is an older post and the OP has finished by now. Thanks for posting this. Yes, I too have seen conflicting information. This is the best YouTube I've seen where this mystery is explained. This is the torsion spring on a Dometic 9100 electric awning on the opposite end of the tube from the motor.
The title is:

9:21 all right so what we're going to do is
9:22 add tension to the uh torsion here we're
9:25 gonna do about eight turns and we're
9:26 gonna go away from the top of the coach
9:28 that's how I remember it so not
9:30 counterclockwise not clockwise because
9:32 depends on which side you're on that
9:34 doesn't make any sense I just say away
9:36 from the top

IMHO, It's a decent video with appropriate cautions about the dangers involved.
