We love the floor plan on the Rockwood 2204S with the twin beds up front. But the issue we had was although the two mattresses are comfortable they are light weight and slide all over the place which means the bedding is also always a mess. It is designed that way to convert into a giant King bed with two additional mattresses that fill the middle aisle.
We knew that we would never use it as a King so it would always be a mess. We disposed of the little filler mattresses right away-who’s got room to store those and if I wanted a bigger bed I would have purchased a model with a bigger permanent bed.
I decide to fix the issue we needed to stabilize the head and foot of the mattress but still allow it to lift to access the storage boxes.
For the head we planned on building a box or small dresser on top of the low flat shelf between the beds that acts as a very low table. This needed to be 17.5 wide to hold the mattresses. And we thought about 9” in height would be about right providing a nice drawer for additional storage. I started looking on-line for a pre-built unit like that when I ran into metal boxes with drawers which lead to metal shelf safes. Hey, my wife loves the idea of a safe-bingo! We purchased a Verifi brand fingerprint smart safe with the exact dimension we were looking for-or close. I had some scrap cherry flooring which I glued to the top of it and we bought a table lamp from Target that we converted to 12 volt for a great reading bed light. My wife also found Beddy brand combo sleeping sheets, blankets, comforter to make and keep a bed made. If anyone is interested in doing something similar check out Verfisafe.com and Beddys.com
Regarding the issue of the mattress squirting out on the foot I made a bracket out of high density polyethylene (white cutting board material). I simply developed the width I needed by playing with different pvc irrigation fitting I had. I found two that gave me my dimension, used pvc glue, drilled holes, cut a handle and screwed directly into aluminum frame of the mattress box. Now I have a stay for the mattress and a nice handle to raise the mattress box top to access the storage.
Maybe these tips and tricks can help others.
