Hot Water Heater

We have a 2009 Lexington 300SS and having a problem with our hot water heater. When we turn on the electric switch on the panel the propane starts up. There is a switch on the outside of the motorhome under the tank and it makes no difference if it's on or off - the propane still starts up. Any suggestions?

The inside switch is for the DSI/propane only and is operating as it is designed. The outside switch is for the electric heating element only.

They control two different modes of heating.

If you want to use the electric heating element, you will only use the switch on the face of the water heater. This FAQ may help explain it all:

I followed the Sub electric switch link, went out to my 2012 Lexi, and lo n behold I have an electric rocker switch. Never noticed it before, thought mine was gas only.
Just goes to show, you learn something new everyday, especially from the folks on the forum.

Good deal. The operation of the dual power source Suburban water heater is one of the more misunderstood appliances....as well as one of the more often neglected parts of a PDI where dealers fail to properly explain it.

This is the reason we have the detailed FAQ in the forums. I probably link to it more than any other thing, in trying to answer questions here.

Water heater bypass valves are a close second though.

Water Heater

Due to the water heater switch being less than convenient outside in the water heater cabinet, I installed a switch on the end of my bed frame on my '06 Lexie 255 GTS. I also installed a large red LED just below the switch to remind me the water heater is on. Since my unit stays plugged in under my RV Port when not in use, I did not want my water heater on all the time. Outside without the LED to remind me, I forgot it more often than remembered it... The location where I installed the switch is only about a foot from my breaker box, so easy breezy!
