New tire option for 235/75/15???

I’m back! Years ago my wife and I bought a used A Frame when we first got married. We loved it. I did so much work to it…it was awesome. Sadly we had to sell it when we moved over seas. We have since returned, now with 2 kids (age 6 and 8) they keep asking about camping and campers.

I did some searching, having owned one I knew all the problems areas…bubble windows and such. I wanted a used unit, with the toy hauler deck for our mountain bikes and gear…and it also didn’t have to be perfect. I’m willing to do the work! Now that I’ve bored you, below is the question.

*** We have a 2018 Forestriver Flagstaff T12RBTHSE (Think A Frame with the toy hauler deck.) It has the Westlake 235/75/15 tires that came on this from the factory as did many R-Pods.

I’m in search of new tires. The tires on our A Frame are 8 years old…and have been out in the sun, stored outside for that entire time.

There aren’t many options…the Westlakes are over $300 a tire from etrailer. While they are well reviewed and don’t seem to have any history of blow outs that other manufacturers have had…I’m really wondering if this is the best tire choice?

While going down the google rabbit whole I found a possible option. The Haida Puma HD818 LT 235/75R15 116/113Q E (10 Ply) AT A/T All Terrain Tire. This tire is around $100 a tire!!!

It’s an E rated tire which exceeds the D Rated Westlakes. I went further into the Workd Wide Web and it seems that Haida is well reviewed. They are a Chinese company but tend to over build their sidewalls as a standard.

The tire conversion is like walking into a buzz saw, it can be full of opinions, and also very good information. This all makes sense…blow outs and tire failures can destroy a camper and in the worst cases be deadly.

With that said…I’d like to stay with the factory size, 235/75/15. I know I could go down a size…but if at all possible I’d prefer not to. Also we intend to go “off road.” We’re out west, in Colorado…we will undoubtedly end up on dirt roads for most of our adventures.

So my question(s) is…would you buy the Haida?? Have you heard of this tire or know any one running it?? Is there another option other than the popular down sizing to the Goodyear Endurance, or factory installed Westlake?

Thanks in advance!!

My Westlake tire cost me $2000 for a new fender. They were under 3 years old and had been treated well.

We use commercial Goodyear tires now. A different class. $500 each.

Cannot recommend anything. Sailun was my second choice, G rated tires. Do not know if they make other sizes.

I do not like names I do not recognize.

Colorado, I have the same Westlakes on a 2019, they have been very good and would have loved to replace them with same, but as you said, there is a weird monopoly going on with etrailer and Westlake, locking out other sellers, and keeping the price very unreasonable. I have 6 seasons on them now.

Tomkat, just wondering what year your camper was that had a blowout. I know Westlake was sued years before my 2019 camper and those issues were supposedly fixed. I rarely hear about Westlake blowouts anymore.

Our Westlakes were on our 2018 rv. So I would assume they were made in late 2017.
Ok, my research shows that the big recall and lawsuits over thread delamination on Westlakes happened years before yours. Certainly any RV tire can blowout on any RV, just haven't heard much of it involving Westlake lately. Was just curious if your fit that older category of failures, but yours was recent.

Simple Tire?

Simple Tire offers two ST235/75/15 tires:
OmniTrail $90.31 per tire
Gladiator $121.74 per tire

https://simpletire.com/tire-sizes/st235-75r15

With a multi-axle trailer you would really want to have an ST tire because of the sideways stress on the tires when turning. Since the A-frame is a single-axle trailer it seems like it would be less important.

Thanks! I like the look of those Gladiators. Trying to figure out the speed rating. Weird that's not included in the specs for that item on the webpage.

The Gladiator is an "N" Speed rating (86 mph). The "F" shown on Simple Tire's website has to be a mistake as zn F rated tire is only 50 mph.

Go to Gladiator tires website.

I would give a very serious look at Carlisle tires for trailers. They are really a great tire and reasonable priced.

If one is concerned about speed rating, likely one is driving too dang fast while towing a trailer.

Interesting suggestions…I’ll check them out…I’m with you too, I would prefer to stick with a more aggressive tire more suited for off road. I’m curious what tires are found on the NB trailers or Black Diamond.

I like the Gladiator X COMP A/T, but I’m not showing the 235/75/15 listed on their website…I see them listed for sale a couple of places…I wonder if they’re still being manufactured? I did send an to Gladiator for more information. I’ll report back with their response

Yeah, I think that could be a mistake. I've never seen a xcomp in a ST tire. If you look at the description it says LT tire, not ST tire. Even then I haven't seen that tire in a Load Range F (12 PLY RATED). 235/75R15

very curious here

The tire store “Simple Tire” has them listed on EBay as well…I’m with you, I’m guessing it’s a mistake. I’m going to follow up and confirm that Simple Tire actually has them in stock.

Cool Beans. Let me know. My Gladiator/Zenna distributor does not show them when using the item number but that does not necessarily mean they are not made specifically for a certain customer chain only. The item number prefaces DO belong to the Gladiator x-Comp AT family (193236). Very curious but it all does show as a LT tire not a ST tire.

My concern is speed rating is way too low on some trailer tires. My current Westlakes are currently rated for 75mph. I don't normally tow that fast, but I have for short bursts passing at times if the conditions are safe to do so (small trailer). Also, I have been in traffic that is all going 70, and it would unsafe going less. I would not like to be riding on lesser rated tires, right at the edge of the rating.

Noted. I thought that was questionable too. That's probably not an ST tire.

Well the plot thickens! I called Gladiator and talked with a young man who said that they currently don’t manufacture the Gladiator X COMP A/T in an ST235/75/15. He did say that it’s possible that they did manufacture it at one time but no longer do, he wasn’t sure but was going to look into it.

So upon further investigation…I called simple tire and they swear they have that exact tire in stock. I’m not sure what the deal is, but I’m honestly considering taking a chance and ordering them. If what they send me isn’t the correct tire…I could easily return them…it’s almost worth the gamble on a potentially great tire/option.
