New Yamaha 5500 Generator in some 2021's

Maybe the new trend to loud gen sets is some sort of conspiracy by RV manufacturers to steer consumers to more profitable lithium and solar.

Generator Removal

I was able to remove the generator all by myself by placing a piece of plywood on the edge of the MH opening and the other end placed on top of a chair and then sliding out the generator.

Where possible, depending on application, I'd like to see both kits installed at the factory on new installations, and it would be nice to see units in the field provided the kits at no cost to original owners.

Right after the standard $1.50 bathroom faucets get upgraded to better ones, right? :(

Yeah, they are annoyingly cheap and cheap looking.

But you know what I am saying. With all the hype on NPSs website about the new generator it ought to deliver. I guess they forgot to test it in the desert heat while mounted in a motorhime [emoji38]

Back to faucets, would like to replace them all but too busy keeping up with other items breaking or no longer working properly. City water inlet and Winegard elevator gear replacement tomorrow.

New GT5 I've been looking at is still on the dealers lot. I could use that extra 45 hp towing. Might even cut down on repairs for a few years by buying it!

OK, now THAT is the funniest thing I've read in a long time! :)

Which 5500? The NPS 5500 or the Onan 5500? Some 2021's were built with the Onan.

If you have the Onan, do NOT run it with the generator cover off for more than a short while. The Onan manual specifically states the generator cover must be in place or the generator will overheat. The Onan 5500 is air-cooled and the cover is needed to channel the air correctly.

The fuel pickup for either only extends into the gas tank for the top 75%. That's to prevent the generator from running the motorhome completely out of fuel. If you are near 1/4 tank that may be your issue.

Had my Onan 5500 act up this summer. Needed it driving in temps over 100. Quit several times. When we got to camp tried again and it did it again with an unknown red light on. Could feel the heat. Left the compartment door open half hourish and restarted: happy campers!

Vapor locking

I have a 2021 GT5 31L5C with the NPS inveter/generator. First issue, when it’s hot, really hot, it dies. It appears as though it’s a vapor lock. I have been to Elkhart IN. twice for warranty work at the factory. The warranty manager has been fantastic to work with. He pointed me in the direction of the NPS warranty center. After speaking to him, he believes it’s a fuel pump pressure problem. They say it’s a forest River/ Ford issue but tackled it themselves. Supposedly the fuel pump is a 1.3psi pump, when it’s hot, the factory Ford fuel tank is creating a large vacuum and the pump can’t overcome it. NPS sent me a new 4.3psi fuel pump, they say this fixes the issue. Will post back when I get around ito replacing the pump.

Second issue, the tailpipe out of the muffler cracked around the weld. It cracked due to vibration because Forest River never put a bolt in the support bracket. Welded the crack and supported tail pipe. NPS did send me a new muffler assembly in case my weld area fails.

NPS Sputtering Corrected

I had the same problem with my NPS generator on my Georgetown 31L5 sputtering and then quitting. Worked through the issue with NPS (these guys were super responsive) and the issue was related to the ability of the fuel pump to overcome back pressure in the fuel tank. Replaced the pump with a racing fuel pump and I've operated the unit 30 hours through some of the hottest desert locations.

As far as the weld breaking on the exhaust also had that problem. I'd like to know which bolt was missing that precipitated the problem?

It was just the bolt that secured the exhaust pipe support hanger. That allowed the severe vibration of generator running and driving cause the crack.

Thanks - that is what I thought because mine broke at the same place.

NPS is due to come out with a new exhaust and mount sometime early next year.
I'll let you know when I get my hands on one if it is a better solution to the tail wagging the dog syndrome on the current configuration.

So the stock fuel pump cannot pull enough against the sealed fuel tank? If that is it then simply loosening the fuel cap on the motorhome should immediately fix that issue, right?

You probably couldn't drive that way or you'd get a CEL on the engine, though.

Did you notice whether the level of fuel in the tank affected your issue? I would think a full tank would have no or less issues then one 50% full of air.

2021 FR3 Forest River NPS Generator Nightmare

Wanted to post to get input

Bought 2021 Fr3 Forest River 11/21. Generator worked fine in winter. Then recently when OTS more than 90 degrees generator failed. NPS said to replace fuel pump, and within one day this fuel pump failed. Then fuel pump replaced again after generator failed once more. New fuel pump intact but generator comes on and off for 3-4 hours. I am thinking this is overheating but NPS says its not possible.

The fuel lines have been run and no kinks etc and nothing obvious in fuel tank etc

Does anyone have any ideas?

Its now back at factory but I dont think anyone really knows whats up?

Generator cannot handle 2 air conditioners in temp over 100

The NPS generator in my 2021 Georgetown is a real problem. First, it was extremely noisy as it ran full speed, no matter the load. A $500 kit that enabled idling helped. Second, it overheats when the temperature is over 100 degrees. NPS sent me a new more powerful fuel pump which I installed but it did not solve the problem. I gave it a real test at Glamis sand dunes where the temperature was 103. At 90, both airs would work but above 100 the unit would start sputtering and ready to stop after half an hour. I wound up closing the partition wall to the bedroom and running only one air conditioner in the front. I also kept the bin door open but I could feel the excessive heat in the generator. After spending $150,000, I am dismayed that I cannot run 2 airs when the need is the greatest. I do not see a solution but would have chosen an Onan if that would have been offered.

NPS Gen not working at temps over 100

I own a 2021 Georgetown 31L5 with a NPS5500 Gen and live in the high desert in California.

The forecast for Wednesday is 103 and will test my unit to see if I experience the same issue.

I understand you were running both AC's at about this temperature and experienced gen failures.
1) Anything else that might make a difference?
2) What was the breeze like as we typically get a strong breeze when the temperature get this high?

I'll update this thread with my observations after my test on Wednesday.

I did not run microwave and there was no breeze. We left early as the forecast for the next day was 107.

Update

NPS contacted me today and they believe they have the solution. I have one of the earliest builds that have a problem with the oil temperature wiring causing erratic behavior when too hot. They will send me a new wiring harness that should solve the problem. Unfortunately, I won't be able to test it for a while as I don't have any trips planned in this heat. NPS has been very cooperative in trying to solve the problem.
