We have a Salem 24 View which also has a tankless hot water heater. What we found is that we set it to the temperature we want in the shower, in our case 100F. When we take a shower we don't use any cold water, just the hot. This works fine.
The problem seems to be that if you don't use enough hot water, the unit overheats and faults out, then you either have to turn it off or wait for it to reset.
We also find that if you turn off the shower, the unit. shuts down. When you turn the shower back on there is about 30 seconds of hot water then there is about 10 - 15 seconds of cold before the heater is fully running.
When we first got it, we were told to set it like you do for a regular hot water heater. With both hot and cold water on, there wasn't enough water running through the unit and it faulted out ... very annoying. With only using hot water, it seems to work the way it should. We do the same for the kitchen and bathroom sink faucets, only turn on the hot water.
That is our experience.
