propane question

I have been on the road for the last month, and this is the first time I had to refill the propane tanks. One tank went empty, so I switched to the left side tank. I had the right side tank refilled. $15, for 30 gal tank at "Jacks" in South Dakota.

In a few days the hot water heater stopped, so I switched tanks again to the one I just got done.

I took the other tank off, thinking it was empty but it was full.


Question: Could my gas regulator be shot on the one side? It worked okay for a few days.

Question: Can the regulator be cleaned, or should I just replace the regulaor?

Question: Could there be a problem with the tank. When I have time I was going to swap the tanks.

Might try unhooking the pigtail to the suspect tank and reconnecting it. Do you have a switchable regulator? Might just try switching the tank positions and see if that changes anything.

These new tanks can be a pain. If the tank was over filled. Also if you open the valve on tank to fast.

Yes I have the red/green dot regulator. When we can sit still for a day I'll try switching tanks.

Turn both valves OFF then very very slowly turn them both back on.
Make sure regulator is pointed to the tank you thought was empty. I bet it works after that.

Prenote: this work on standard grills which are high pressure may not work on low pressure systems

I had my grill going and get only get a small flame. When i called manufacturer they asked me to reset regulator by disconnecting the tank then opening tank valve all the way and then connecting to regulator. It worked. Happened at a friends house having a party and we did it their and wallah normal flames. Not sure id it work on low pressure systems

I had a simular problem and ended up with a small brass check valve that was bad. The check valve was screwed in to the regulator and then the hose was screwed in to the check valve. The hoses also have check valves in them. I changed hoses, swapped bottles and finally spotted the check valve.

I was getting the red reset light on more and more on my hot water heater, so I doubled check the owners manual. My hot water heater was failing to light. Then I heard a bang one or two times. I then purchase a can of compressed air to clean the lighting parts on the hot water heater.

The compressed air did the trick, a bunch of soot and trash was removed. The hot water heater has worked great since the cleaning.

It seems that I missed the basics of checking all gas appliances on working order.
