Relocating spare tire from rear bumper

I recently took the spare tire and bracket off the rear bumper off my Rockwood Windjammer 3006W and relocated it in the front under the V-nose section. I made a mounting plate and bolted it to the cross member. I used the plastic cover above the tire to act like an umbrella and dirt shield. This eliminates the rear weight and flexing stress on the bumper and frame behind the axles. Also it is out of view for cosmetic appeal and is more secure from theft.

I saw this on a couple of Coachman travel trailers while camping in Hocking Hills Logan Ohio a few weeks ago...before winter came back. This solved several issues that have been reported in the forums that I have seen. You can't even see the assembly while standing next to the camper either. The only draw back I see with this set-up is laying on the ground to get at it should you ever have a flat tire. Trade offs with everything.

I would like to find a way to stow my spare tire for our Salam 30kqbss. We dont have a tire carrier to start with. any ideas out there. I want to mount it some where in the under the back with a cable or something to lower it when needed.

Just purchased a 3006w. We're you having issues with the rear mount spare tire? Thought about taking it off for a bike rack...but I have read that is not recommended.

Check with FR parts Maybe. My spare is mounted under the front from the factory. It's mounted on a rack that hinges on the far side and has pins to release on the near side:thumbsup: salingerie--like what you did especially the cover!

BDAVIS.....The end caps almost worked out of the bumper tube on our first trip. I removed the spare tire and took the mounting hardware off of the bumper at the campground and put them in the truck. The caps remained in the bumper the entire trip home.....problem solved. Just trying to circumvent stress issues that have ben reported from other members of this forum.

Would like to move the spare tire, and putting it under the trailer is good with the exception of making it a bear to get to in case you need it. If it could be put on a slide and taken out on the curb side, it would be ideal. Just don't want to lay down on the hot pavement and unbolt it.

Not sure if it was a factory option or not but on my new to me 2011 Coachman Freedom Express 295RLDS it has the spare tire mounted under the tongue of the TT. The tech pointed it out to me and showed me the crank needed to lower it on a cable. Same principle as a spare on the trucks. Now that you guys mention it, I will need to check it to see if it needs lubed up prior to the season.

Here are a couple pics.

Anyone with a flat tire on a pick up know this dilema. crawl on the ground then scrape dirt off the hardware after you release the tire. Is this crank down or loosen bolts and drop? I think I prefer bumper mount.

I made the bracket with one center threaded rod with a round plate that fits the hub diameter of the wheel. One nut holds the assembly up in the carrier. As to your preference for the rear bumper mount.....to each his own. I just wanted to share what I did with my trailer. I will take the laying under the trailer for a few minutes if the need arises. The nice clean look of the rear bumper and no flex stress issues is worth the hassle for me. Just my 2 pence.

I just came across this on YouTube and thinking of getting it. My camper doesn't come with a spare, and this may work. AND, if I can fit 2, may consider one for the Jeep's spare, since it has to be removed for towing.

Where can you buy one? I am carrying my spare in the truck bed, because I don't like it on the cargo rack that my vcross comes with. This is a great solution, I think.

Here is the email I got from BAL.

Thank you for your interest in our BAL Hide-A-Spare. Since this is a relatively new item not many distributors are stocking them yet. Once you decide which model you need you may need to have your local RV supply store special order it for you. Or you can contact www.campingworld.com; www.colawrvs.com; or www.nonstopshopper.com. They all are very good with special orders. Delivery will depend on our available inventory.

We had quite a bit of wobble in our spare.

First thing I did was chop out the extra 1.5" space between tire and upright.
Now tire is snug to bracket. Most vibration is gone, but I would still like to relocate tire to the underside.
