My wife and I have owned a Rockwood fifth wheel that we purchased new in 2019. We decided to downsize, so we just purchased a Flagstaff bumper pull trailer. We've used State Farm for insurance for everything for many years, so I sent them the info on the new RV to get it added to our policy. They came back with a price that is 260% higher than our current RV!

Just to give you an idea of how much of a shock this is to me, you must realize that we only paid $8K more for the new rv in 2025 than what we paid for the old one in 2019. If I purchased the same model fifth wheel today, it would be something like $15-20K more than the rv we just purchased.

I am boggled by this. I got the quote too late in the day today for me to respond to them before they closed for the day. I'm going to have to work them over a bit next week to see if they can justify that.

That is one way to get out of the RV insurance business without broadcasting you are getting out of it.

Plenty of other insurance companies out there that would like your business, time to shop around.

Yup every provider can-be-or-gets sucky eventually; we grew to detest State Farm. I've found reasonable pricing and a great agent with Farmers.

I used Progressive's website to get quotes for both my new RV and my old RV and when I added the two together, the cost was close to the quote State Farm gave me for the new one. I'm wondering if the agent made a goof and somehow combined the two premiums and sent that to me as a quote. I'll find out on Monday.

I had Allstate for over 20 years. Decided to price shop a little over a year ago. I ended up with Progressive. House, three vehicles, the motorhome and an umbrella policy for $2,400 less per year than Allstate. I figured I would get hosed with renewal, not bad the whole pile went up a hundered and change.

Progressive! We love our house/vehicles carrier (Amica, a mutual company), but they don't do stationary trailers. Progressive covers ours inexpensively, $250/year.

Our Farmers (Foremost) is $295. We have all our insurance there. Had Progressive years ago for motorcycles and liked them. Don't recall why we didn't go with them when we moved--I think I wanted a local agent.

I'm guessing now but I know our boat insurance assumes a short season and suppose the same might be true up here in re: the TT...

All insurance costs are projected to go up because replacement parts are going up.

We left State Farm for our rv because their premiums jumped.

There are several threads on higher insurance for everyone, everywhere. When that happened in the past we could successfully shop for cheaper insurance. That seems to no longer be the case. All our insurances have increased and we could find no other policies that were cheap enough to make a move worthwhile.

Ours has increased about 12% each year for the past 2 years with no claims being filed.

Tariff's bite the unwary again.
Most everything in an RV is imported or made of imported parts.
Got an insurance claim? Parts cost more, insurance company pays more - - you pay more.
Expect the same for auto insurance.

Remember 80% of your insurance is the agent fee

Just like in every industry, when costs to the "Seller' go up the price on the product goes up.

If costs on new RV's go up repair/replacement costs follow. How many insured RV's have been destroyed i. The last few years by Hurricanes, Tornados, Fires, not to mention the usual accidents and thefts.

To put a cherry on the Sundae there's "Inflation".

Can't speak for all states but in my home state Insurance Rates are regulated heavily. Doubt there's much gouging going on.

Update: Apparently State Farm really doesn't want to be in the RV insurance biz too badly. The original quote was confirmed this morning by the agent.

I'm not going to badmouth State Farm for this. I've been with them many years and they have never given me any reason to think they were ripping me off. I do know that insurance companies pick their specialties and compete heavily in that area and State Farm is no different. Every time I shop around for better prices almost every company will give me a better rate on my house than State Farm does, but because of bundling discounts I would lose if I move my house insurance, I keep my house with them. As far as I know, my RV doesn't give me any bundling discounts, so off to a competitor with that!

I will also say that the claims I have made with State Farm have been handled without issues, so I was tempted to stay with them for my RV just because they are a known entity vs. the new company which is an unknown, but when the new company came in with a quote that was 40% less than State Farm, I decided to take my chances. I've been insuring RV's for the last 20 years and have never made a claim. I can't predict the future, but I'm willing to take my chances.

I also have had State Farm for years and years on my houses and autos.
I used them for the first RV, also - - - until I actually sat down and read the policy.
Let's just say that State Farm is primarily a house/auto insurance company and are only incidentally in the RV business. Their policies for boats/RV's leave a lot to be desired. The fine print includes lots (and lots) of exceptions.

It's better, IMO, to find a company whose main interest is recreational items - - boats, airplanes, RV's, etc.. Better, more complete coverage and usually at a better price.
