On this episode we head to Deer Lake RV park for a couple of days of R&R after 52 days on the road. We were a little surprised when our dinner was interrupted by an air raid siren!
From Deer Lake we headed to Port au Port and visited the beautiful Our Lady of Mercy Heritage Church. The church, Newfoundland’s largest wooden structure, opened in 1925. It was built by local fishermen, farmers and miners and the ceiling is constructed the same way they would have built the hull of a schooner. In essence, the ceiling is an upside-down boat.
From the church we made a quick stop at Secret Cove Brewery and drove through Stephenville and the decommissioned Ernest Harmon US Air Force Base, before making it to Grand Codroy RV Camping Park. This was perhaps the nicest private campground we stayed at in Newfoundland.
We spent our last couple of days on 'The Rock' exploring, including a visit to the Rose Blanche Lighthouse. It, just like the town it protected, was incredibly picturesque. This was a truly beautiful area and we were glad we made the effort to visit Rose Blanche.
The day before our ferry crossing we got a call from Marine Atlantic changing our sailing and check-in times. This was going to make for a VERY early day so we decided to get a bit closer to Port au Basque (the ferry terminal) and spent the last night in Newfoundland boondocking in Wreckhouse.
It was July 17th when we boarded the MV Highlanders and sailed back to North Sydney Nova Scotia. There we spent a night at the Arm of Gold Campground – the closest RV Park to the ferry terminal.
